GameStop accepting "unlimited preorders" for PS4 - Report Jun 21st 2013, 17:09 Leaked memo reveals Sony has told GameStop that "the floodgates are open for PS4 system reserves."
A leaked GameStop memo obtained by GameTrailers states that the retailer will, beginning this weekend, allow "unlimited preorders" for the PlayStation 4. "Starting now, through this weekend and until further notice, Sony has allowed us to take unlimited preorders beyond your current allotments," reads a line from the memo. "In other words, the floodgates are open for PS4 system reserves, we will let you know when to stop preordering based on limited quantities." Earlier this week, Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton said GameStop plans to buy "every single unit" that Sony can manufacture and that PS4 demand may exceed supply. Last week, PlayStation executive Andrew House confirmed that Sony was boosting sales projections for the PS4 after a favorable showing at E3. The PS4 will launch this holiday for $400, a full $100 below Microsoft's Xbox One. The Wii U has gotten off to a slow start, but retailer GameStop isn't betting against the system anytime soon. "Definitely don’t count the Wii U out," GameStop president Tony Bartel told GameSpot in a new interview. GameStop CFO Rob Lloyd said in February that the Wii U needs blockbuster titles to spark sales, and Bartel believes those titles are on the way. Nintendo's E3 showing last week included major first-party titles like Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros., Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, and Super Mario 3D World. These games will help drive consumer interest, Bartel said. "They are also launching several games later this year, so we expect to see a lot of interest from consumers as we head into the holidays," Bartel said. Bartel isn't the only industry figure to believe Nintendo can turn it around with the Wii U. Deus Ex and Epic Mickey designer Warren Spector said last month: "I think you underestimate Nintendo at your peril." Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg expressed a similar sentiment before the platform launched. "You bet against Nintendo at your peril," Hirshberg said in 2011. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata addressed the sluggish Wii U sales recently, saying poor console adoption was a result of marketing "relaxation." "We are to blame. We relaxed our [marketing] efforts, so the consumers today still cannot understand what's so good and unique about the Wii U," Iwata said. GameSpot's full interview with Bartel will be published later today. Hotline Miami will arrive on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita on June 25, Sony announced today. The game will launch as a Cross-Buy title, allowing users to play the top-down action game on both platforms with one purchase. The PlayStation versions of Hotline Miami include an "exclusive" new mask--Russel the raging bull--which was designed by Abstraction and Dennaton Games. When equipped, the mask will turn the entire game black and white except for the neon text and trail of blood players leave behind. The mask is said to give Hotline Miami a classic film look. Hotline Miami for PS3 and PS Vita also features upgrades like leaderboards for every level of the game, Trophies, and touch support for the portable version. Hotline Miami for PC sold over 300,000 units and was pirated at "extraordinary levels." A sequel is in development. For more on the title, check out GameSpot's review. Eidos Montreal, the studio behind Deus Ex: Human Revolution and the upcoming Thief reboot, is working on two currently unannounced titles. Square Enix also reports that David Anfossi, who worked on Deus Ex: Human Revolution as executive producer, has been promoted to Eidos Montreal's studio head. He will oversee the production of Thief, which is due out for current and next-generation platforms in 2014, and the two unannounced games. Eidos Montreal is also currently working on Deus Ex: The Fall for iOS, and a multiplatform release of the Deux Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut alongside its Wii U debut later this year. Anfossi will also work with Darrell Gallagher, newly appointed head of studios at Square Enix and former studio head at Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics. Square Enix is currently re-aligning its Western studios as part of a costly global restructuring process. Earlier this week, it was announced that IO Interactive has been reduced by half and will now concentrate solely on Hitman games. Square Enix's Japanese studios are currently working on, among others, Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The hardest difficulty mode in Wolfenstein: The New Order--called I Am Death Incarnate--will be a daunting task, senior gameplay designer at Machine Games Andreas Öjerfors has told GameSpot. "You will cry blood," he said. Wolfenstein: The New Order was designed with advanced difficulty in mind, Öjerfors explained, noting that game will sport five difficulty levels, just like the original game. "We want it to be a real, real challenge for people. This is not an easy game," Öjerfors said. "Of course we have the five difficulty levels of the original Wolfenstein 3D, like everything from Daddy Can I Play? to I Am Death Incarnate. So you can turn it down or turn it up if you want to. But like the default, normal setting of the game, it's going to be a challenging experience." Öjerfors explained that though the game is aimed at challenging players, the experience was also designed to be fair. "It's difficult, but it's always fair," Öjerfors said. "You're never really cheated. It's always your fault if you die." Wolfenstein: The New Order launches for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC later this year. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 helped the Amazon Video Games store post its biggest preorder week ever, the retailer announced today. During "peak demand" last week, Amazon customers were ordering more than 2,500 Xbox One and PS4 consoles per minute, the company said. Amazon also noted that E3 week preorders for Xbox One and PS4 led to a year-over-year increase in console orders of more than 4,000 percent. In addition, day-one preorders for the two consoles was almost two times that of all video game sales during Black Friday 2012, Amazon said. The Xbox One is currently the bestseller on Amazon's game chart, though the PS4 has five SKUs in the top twenty, while Microsoft has just one--the Xbox One Day One Edition. The Xbox One ($500) and PS4 ($400) launch later this year. The upcoming Halo title for Xbox One is a "legitimate" version of Halo, according to Microsoft Game Studios corporate vice president Phil Spencer. Speaking with GameSpot during E3, Spencer declined to say if the new game was Halo 5 or a new extension to the series, similar to Halo 3: ODST or Halo Reach. "It is the next Halo game that we are working on. We will talk more about actually the story arc in the game and how it plays out; we've got more time to talk about that," Spencer said. Xbox boss Don Mattrick recently referred to the next Halo game as Halo 5. Spencer did say, though, that it was important for 343 Industries producer Bonnie Ross to come out on stage during Microsoft's E3 briefing to show gamers the project is a genuine entry in the series. "But having [producer Bonnie Ross] come out and announce the game, making sure people know it's a legitimate version of Halo coming out, and when it's coming out, and features that they're focused on we thought was’important." Microsoft revealed during PAX Prime in 2011 that Halo 4 was the beginning of The Reclaimer Trilogy, which would span Halo 5 and Halo 6. This is no longer the case, a Microsoft representative confirmed. "While we originally said trilogy, we've actually expanded this to more of a saga, so we don't want to limit the Reclaimer story within a trilogy." The new Halo game for Xbox One will launch in 2014.
