The recent wave of layoffs at Electronic Arts totaled about 10 percent of global staff at the FIFA and Battlefield publisher, the company announced today. EA CFO Blake Jorgensen confirmed the figure today during a post-earnings financial call. He said EA expects to recognize $16 million in severance expenses as a result of the cost reduction move. The 10 percent global layoff figure was rumored last month. At the end of 2012, EA employed around 9,370 people across the world. A ten percent staff reduction would mean the company's total headcount now stands at around 8,400 developers. EA has yet to detail which teams were impacted and a company representative was not immediately available to comment. Gamers excited about the new Star Wars games from Battlefield studio DICE and Dead Space developer Visceral Games may want to get comfortable. During a post-earnings financial call today, Electronic Arts chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen said the firm will not publish any new Star Wars games during the company's fiscal 2014, which runs April 1, 2013 through March 31, 2014. EA yesterday announced a deal with The Walt Disney Company that will make EA the exclusive developer of "core" Star Wars games. These games will be delivered on "all interactive platforms" and will run on the Frostbite 3 game engine. No story or gameplay details about any of the new Star Wars projects have been divulged thus far. Though there will not be any new Star Wars games in fiscal 2014, EA said today that it will release 11 major titles in the year (compared to 13 last year) and 15 mobile titles for iOS and Android.
