Gran Turismo will reveal 'what's next' for the series on May 15 May 8th 2013, 16:57 "We felt that 15 years of GT was an event worth celebrating," says Sony.
Sony has confirmed that Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi will reveal the future of the series during an event taking place at the UK's Silverstone racing circuit on May 15. While Sony is not saying whether Polyphony Digital has been working on Gran Turismo 6, SCEE senior vice president Michael Denny name-dropped the title as a PlayStation 3 game in an interview earlier this year. The event, designed to commemorate the 15th anniversary of Sony's flagship driving simulator, will be attended by car manufacturers Nissan, Audi, BMW, Ford, Honda, Jaguar, KTM, Mercedes-Benz, Tesla, and Toyota. "The Gran Turismo franchise continues to be extremely important to PlayStation," explained Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president Jim Ryan. "We felt that 15 years of GT was an event worth celebrating along with our colleagues from the Americas, Asia, and Japan." "As well as experiencing the development of the franchise and comparing the virtual and real, it will be a pleasure to see Yamauchi-san and hear what's next for Gran Turismo," added Ryan. The Silverstone circuit has never actually featured in a Gran Turismo to date, but GTPlanet reported in September 2012 that Polyphony Digital staff have visited the track several times to take photographs and scans. Deus Ex and Epic Mickey designer Warren Spector has apologized for speaking out against the recently announced Wolfenstein: The New Order. In an update to his Facebook page, the industry veteran apologized directly to the team at MachineGames. "I'm sorry. I owe the Wolfenstein team an apology," Spector said. "I wasn't trying to diss you or your game. I have total respect for anyone making a game. I know how hard it is… And to everyone who pointed out that I didn't know enough about the game to judge, well, you were right. Consider this my mea culpa." Spector went on to explain that he was not motivated to lash out at the Wolfenstein announcement over his most recent games Epic Mickey and its sequel coming up short. In fact, he argued the opposite is true. "No sour grapes here. None. I'm disappointed that people assume they know my motivations for saying what I said," Spector said. "I'm not bitter about the 'failure' of the Disney Epic Mickey games--I don't consider them failures. They're the two best-selling games I've worked on!" Though Spector said he is sorry for describing Wolfenstein: The New Order as a "generically dark, monochromatic, FPS, kill-the-Nazi-giant-robot game," he maintains that there is not enough variety in games today. "Though I was wrong to take out general frustrations on an individual game and on a single team, I'll stand by my overall statement about lack of variety and innovation in mainstream gaming," Spector said. "I was simply expressing, once again, my long-held belief that we make too many shooters, lots of which look, sound and feel like basically the same game dressed up in different clothes. I've been saying that for years--it's nothing new. Wolfenstein got in the line of fire, but I've been shooting at this target for a long time." Spector's full apology note is available on his Facebook page. Wolfenstein: The New Order launches later this year for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and next-generation consoles. It will not feature a multiplayer component. Check out GameSpot's preview of the game below and come back tomorrow and Friday for continuing coverage. Ubisoft Reflections is currently co-developing open-world action game Watch Dogs, but that's not the only title the United Kingdom outfit is working on. As reported by Joystiq, Ubisoft Reflections managing director Pauline Jacquey said today during the Game Horizon conference that the studio will reveal this new game at the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo next month. "We work on Watch Dogs," Jacquey said. "We work on [Just Dance 4], and we work on something that I'm not supposed to tell you about. I wish that I could. It's going to be announced at E3." Ubisoft Reflections is a frequent collaborator on various projects, including last year's Just Dance 4 and Far Cry 3. The last game the studio developed alone was 2011's Driver: San Francisco. Ubisoft Toronto manager Jade Raymond revealed in March that the studio has two major collaborative projects in the works related to the company's "biggest franchises." In addition, a follow-up to this fall's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is already in development. New games from DICE, BioWare, and EA Sports, as well as Respawn Entertainment are also expected to be announced at E3 2013. Sony today announced that it will waive the $99 PlayStation Mobile publisher license fee for the summer, allowing developers to create games for the PlayStation Vita or any other certified device for free. "This summer, we're throwing down the gauntlet for PlayStation Mobile development and are removing any existing barriers to get your brainchild of a game on this new PlayStation platform," senior manager of mobile content acquisition Sarah Thomson said in a statement. The PlayStation Mobile publisher license is required for distributing games through the PlayStation Store. It is also needed for debugging and testing games. Developers can obtain a license for free through the PlayStation Mobile dev portal beginning today. The promotion ends September 2, though Sony said the duration of the fee waiver is subject to change. PlayStation Mobile launched during October 2012. More information about the platform can be found at its official website. Electronic Arts has registered domain names for Battlefield 13-20. Spotted by Fusible (via Joystiq), EA on May 2 picked up each of the names through a brand protection company called Corporations Service Company (CSC). None of the websites are functional. EA now owns dot-com domain names for Battlefield 2-9 and Battlefield 13-20. Battlefield 10-12 are owned by companies unaffiliated with EA. By comparison, Fusible points out domains for ModernWarfare 8-20 are currently not registered to Activision or anyone for that matter. Battlefield 4 launches this fall for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, but not Wii U. It is the fourth core installment in the shooter series, following 2011's Battlefield 3. The upcoming Wolfenstein: The New Order from Bethesda and MachineGames will not include a multiplayer component, the studios have confirmed with GameSpot. Instead, the current- and next-generation game will strictly be a single-player title, a responsibility MachineGames does not take lightly. "It's such a huge part of video game legacy," creative director Jens Matthies told GameSpot in a new video preview. "If there's a video game museum, Wolfenstein is in the first room. It's the start of the wave that shaped the world of gaming." "On a personal level, I played this when I was younger and it was mind-blowing," Matthies added. "I never then of course dreamed that I was going to be working with it. It's both an honor and a legacy." Not all in the industry as are excited as Matthies is about the new Wolfenstein. Writing on Facebook, Deus Ex and Epic Mickey designer Warren Spector slammed the new game. "Did the world really need another Wolfenstein game? Did we need a generically dark, monochromatic, FPS, kill-the-Nazi-giant-robot game? Uh. No. The world did not. I am so tired of stuff like this," he said. "Oh, and could we all just agree we'll never use the generic gravelly-whisper trailer voice guy ever again? And one more thing: Please stop using Jimi Hendrix to promote your adolescent male power fantasies." Spector has since apologized for his comments. Capcom has announced an expected profit of ¥2.97 billion (approximately $30m/£19.3m) for the 2013 financial year, following its revised April forecast. As predicted, Resident Evil 6 "did not meet with [Capcom's 7 million sales target] and thus was not able to play a role in leading the segment's sales growth." The game has sold 4.9 million copies. UK developer Ninja Theory's take on DmC: Devil May Cry "enjoyed stable popularity in overseas markets and posted solid sales," with the game's last sales tally coming in at 1.15 million copies sold. The popularity of Dragon's Dogma was "greater-than-expected," however, and saw an "unprecedented" million copies sold for an original title. Despite making a profit, Capcom was down 56 percent year-on-year in net income. The publisher previously blamed its current outlook on "excessive outsourcing" and "a delayed response to the expanding digital contents market," two problems it aims to rectify by funneling ¥7.2 billion (£48 million/$73 million) into a company-wide restructuring. Looking ahead, Capcom expects to make a good amount of money in "directing our development resources to the development of online games (mobile, PC online and downloads for consumer games), which is a growing area, and by releasing large-scale titles such as 'Monster Hunter 4' and 'Lost Planet 3' focused on the domestic and overseas markets respectively." For the next financial year, Capcom expects to make ¥6.8 billion ($68m/£44m) in net income. Disney's game division was the company's only unprofitable business during the media giant's latest quarter. The company reported earnings for its second quarter ended March 30 this week, revealing its Interactive business posted a loss of $54. This is $16 million better than last year's $70 million hit. Improved performance in the Interactive division was attributed to revenues rising 8 percent to $194 million due to growth in Disney's Japanese mobile business and lower accounting expenses at its social game studios. Looking ahead, Disney chief financial officer Jay Rasulo said Interactive expects to see a comparable operating loss in the current quarter due to the delay of Disney Infinity from Q3 (April-June) to Q4 (July-September). Earlier this week, Disney and Electronic Arts signed a deal that will see EA become the exclusive developer of "core" Star Wars games. New projects are already in development at Battlefield studio DICE and Dead Space outfit Visceral Games. Read and Post Comments | Get the full article at GameSpot | |
