Eidos: Thief PC version 'extremely important'
Apr 10th 2013, 13:55

Producer St’phane Roy says developer's goal is to make sure PC version not a straight copy of console iteration.

Gamers worried that Eidos Montreal is focusing more intently on the console versions of Thief than PC can breathe a sigh of relief. Producer Stéphane Roy told Strategy Informer that the studio is committing the resources necessary to ensure the PC version is not a simple port.

"No doubt on our side the PC version is extremely important," Roy said. "Just playingThief with a keyboard and mouse it’s different so we must make sure we support that well. For making the PC version we think like a PC gamer, for consoles it’s a different type of beast. It’s one of our goals to make sure that the PC version isn’t just a copy of the console version."

Thief is due out in 2014 for PC, PlayStation 4, and "other next-gen platforms." The game will not feature a competitive multiplayer component.

Roy also revealed that Eidos Montreal considered switching the perspective for Thief and making it a third-person game instead of its familiar first-person orientation. He said the studio made a "full" third-person demo for Thief, but this was ultimately scrapped.

"We gave it a try as there are a lot of games that work better and are more fun in third-person, so we wanted to see if it was possible to have Thief in full third-person," Roy said. "So we gave it a try but finally we decided that part of the series' DNA is the first-person perspective, for the immersion and to convince the player that you are a Master Thief about to pickpocket someone."

Shadowrun Returns will be released in June
Apr 10th 2013, 13:20

Anyone interested in the $75 Collector's Edition will need to preorder it by April 28.

Kickstarter success Shadowrun Returns will be released in June, developer Harebrained Schemes has announced.

The game will be distributed through Steam--all backers of the Kickstarter project will receive a Shadowrun Returns Steam key--and the game's editor will arrive with Steam Workshop support.

For customers who don't want to have to use Steam, Harebrained Games will make a DRM-free version available from their own site. This version won't support user-generated content or any DLC past the game's already announced Berlin expansion.

Preorders will be available on Steam from April 29, with April 28 being the last day customers can preorder the game's $75 Collector's Edition from the Harebrained Schemes website.

A $30 Deluxe Edition is also available, which includes downloads of the game's soundtrack and a Shadowrun Returns anthology PDF.

The Linux version will be released after the Windows and Mac versions, says Harebrained Schemes.

Shadowrun Returns started its Kickstarter campaign asking for $400,000 back in April 2012, and ended a month later with $1,836,447 in donations from 36,276 backers. The isometric RPG is inspired by the Shadowrun tabletop game, and is being overseen by its creator Jordan Weisman.

Sony: We don't just want shooters on PS4
Apr 10th 2013, 12:19

Worldwide Studios boss says big-budget blockbusters "not the only kinds of games that people can have fun with."

When Sony announced the PlayStation 4 in February, the first title shown off for the next-generation platform was not a big-budget blockbuster, but rather Sony Japan's Knack. Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida explained to Edge that this was intentional and meant to demonstrate that PS4 will offer more than just action and shooter games.

"It was pretty intentional," Yoshida said. "We were like yeah we hate to see all the PS4 games being FPS or action-adventure or very photorealistic, you know big-budget blockbuster games. And you know people like these games, but these are not the only kinds of games that people can have fun with."

Big-budget games like Killzone: Shadow Fall and DriveClub were shown later during the meeting, but Yoshida contends that the PS4 is capable of more than just beefed up graphics.

"Yeah, so almost the biggest message that we wanted to send in preparing for the event as well as in designing PS4 was’we at Sony and we at Sony Computer Entertainment, it's just natural for us to enhance the core technology and performance of the hardware, but it’s not the hardware that is the biggest focus," he said.

The PS4 is officially due out this holiday season, though region-specific availability is unknown. According to a past report, the system will launch in November beginning at $430.

Professor Layton developer Level 5 starts work on PS4 game
Apr 10th 2013, 11:54

Professor Layton and Ni no Kuni developer says it might be able to announce the new title soon.

Japanese developer Level 5, creators of Professor Layton and Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, has confirmed it has started work on a PlayStation 4 title.

In an interview with Japanese website Nikkei Trendy (translated by Gematsu), studio boss Akihiro Hino revealed that the studio is in the early stages of developing for Sony’s next-gen console.

’It’s still in the planning stages, but we are also working on a PlayStation 4 title,’ Hino said, adding that the company ’might be able to announce it soon.’

The Japanese studio is also looking at the networking capabilities of the next-gen console. ’PlayStation 4 is next-gen hardware built with the network in mind," said Hino, "so more than graphics performance and specs, we need to think about communication--how to use the network features.’

During the interview Hino also revealed that he thought Sony Japan had set the right price for the PS Vita, and believes that a price cut alone wouldn't be enough to encourage more sales. ’You also have to simultaneously release strategic titles. I think there is a huge amount of anticipation around what those titles will be,’ he said.

Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch topped the UK charts when it launched in January, and has sold over 500,000 copies in Japan.

The last 3DS Professor Layton title, Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, was released across Europe and North America in October 2012. The next game in the series, Professor Layton and the Azran Legacies, was released in Japan at the end of February.

District 9 director still interested in Halo movie
Apr 10th 2013, 11:53

Neill Blomkamp says even after movie famously fell apart years ago, he would be interested in returning if given creative control.

District 9 director Neill Blomkamp is still interested in bringing Halo to the big screen. During a media event for his new film Elysium, Blomkamp explained to IGN that he remains enthralled by the world Bungie created, but would sign on to the film only if he were given creative control.

"I still really love the world and the universe and the mythology of Halo. If I was given control, I would really like to do that film," Blomkamp said.

"But that's the problem. When something pre-exists, there's this idea of my own interpretation versus 150 other people involved with the film's interpretation of the same intellectual property," he added. "Then the entire filmgoing audience has their interpretation. You can really live up to or fail in their eyes. That part isn't appealing to me, but the original pieces are appealing."

Last month, Halo franchise director Frank O'Connor explained that if a Halo movie were to happen, Microsoft would not settle when it came to choosing a director or production company. He said learning to work with the right people was the most important lesson Microsoft learned from producing the Internet series Forward Unto Dawn.

The Halo movie famously fell through. Blomkamp and Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson were at one time attached to the film, but the project was indefinitely postponed in 2006. Instead, Jackson and Blomkamp went on to make the Oscar-nominated sci-fi action movie District 9.

Bethesda says it will make 'considerably more noise' in 2013
Apr 10th 2013, 11:21

Skyrim publisher teases new announcements for this year.

Publisher Bethesda is aiming to make "considerably more noise" in 2013 than it did in 2012, the company's vice president of PR and marketing, Pete Hines, has said.

Speaking on the OXM podcast, Hines teased upcoming announcements from the publisher alongside its known lineup of The Elder Scrolls Online and DLC for Dishonored.

"Obviously The Elder Scrolls Online is out, and we've got the Dishonored DLC," said Hines, "but we will be announcing new stuff and making some noise, and I think when we get the chance to show you guys what we're up to, that you'll sit up and take notice."

Hines said Bethesda was working with "passionate teams who know what they're doing," but would not go into details.

As for what Bethesda might be looking to show, last week the publisher confirmed that the id Software shooter Doom 4 had been rebooted but was still in development, and many gamers would almost certainly be excited to hear about a follow-up to 2011's The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

BioWare cofounder says PS4 and 720 stuck in a 'sick market for old-school gaming'
Apr 10th 2013, 10:38

"Everyone's kind of holding out hope for the new consoles," says Dr. Greg Zeschuk, "but I honestly don't think they're going to be that big a deal."

Dr. Greg Zeschuk, co-founder of Mass Effect developer BioWare, has spoken about the upcoming next generation of video game consoles, saying that he doesn't "think they're going to be that big a deal."

"We are in a kind of sick market for old-school gaming," opened Zeschuk in an interview with GamesIndustry International.

"Everyone's kind of holding out hope for the new consoles, but I honestly don't think they're going to be that big a deal. I worry a lot that unless Microsoft or Sony pull something magically out of a hat, it's pretty much the same old, same old repackaged and I don't think they're going to change the dynamic of the retail market."

"I don't see how they can," added Zeschuk. "The market is what it is."

Sony announced the PlayStation 4 in February ahead of a launch later in 2013. Microsoft has yet to unveil the successor to the Xbox 360, although the latest rumours suggest the company is leaning toward a May unveiling.

Despite his gloomy forecast, Zeschuk said that successes were possible in the industry, pointing to Activision Blizzard as an example of a large publisher currently succeeding in AAA development. "Activision and Blizzard have been doing really well, and they've been very disciplined and focused," he said.

"But how long can they continue?" said Zeschuk. "They've been relying on a smaller number of titles, but no title works forever, and obviously they will be working hard to replace the games they're working on. So they're probably one of the shining examples of a company that's done well by really doubling down on a very narrow amount of things, and trying some different stuff - I'm actually really impressed with Skylanders."

Speaking earlier in the interview, Zeschuk also dismissed the idea that BioWare had to conform to the whims of EA. "The best analogy I use, in a positive way, is EA gives you enough rope to hang yourself. It was really interesting because we really made all the choices we wanted to make ourselves; these are all things we wanted to try. And that's something to remember - while we were independent we didn't have quite the resources we had as part of EA, and then we got to EA and it was like, 'Wow, we can do all this stuff.' We had to be really thoughtful about what we wanted to focus on."

Zeschuk, and fellow BioWare co-founder Ray Muzyka, retired from the studio and the games industry in September 2012. When asked if he would ever return to the games industry, Zeschuk said that he doesn't see himself creating a new development studio.

"I think part of it, too, is that I'm not spending as much time playing games as I used to. I used to play them all time. I used to have my finger on the pulse, and absolutely I'm less on the pulse than I was. I still play some big releases, and I'm going to grab BioShock Infinite, but I don't play the way I used to play."

Zeschuk's comments were made as part of a larger discussion about whether Star Wars: The Old Republic had a part to play in the recent resignation of former EA CEO John Riccitiello. "I can't really speak to why John's not there anymore," said Zeschuk, "but [The Old Republic] was one of many [EA] games released, and we're in a context where just a few days later it was Yoichi Wada who was booted out from Square Enix."

Greg Zeschuk is currently working on passion project The Beer Diaries, a site dedicated to craft beers.

SimCity sees return of Cheetah Speed
Apr 10th 2013, 09:25

SimCity's fastest setting re-enabled a month after being temporarily removed.

Maxis has reenabled Cheetah Speed in its recently released SimCity, over a month after it was temporarily removed from the game.

"Yes, it's true - we've recently brought back Cheetah Speed," says SimCity's Twitter feed.

Cheetah Speed is the fastest setting for passing time in SimCity. The mode was disabled on March 7, shortly after the game's disastrous launch, in order to take load off the game's overburdened servers. Other "non-critical" features were also removed from the game at the time, such as achievements and leaderboards.

Maxis also said that SimCity Update 2.0 is in development, and promised to reveal more information soon.

Despite its issues at launch, SimCity sold 1.1 million copies in its first two weeks on sale. The game's latest DLC offers a free car dock sponsored by Nissan Leaf.

PSN hackers plead guilty in UK court
Apr 10th 2013, 07:58

Four British men, allegedly part of LulzSec, plead guilty to the hacking of more than 70 million PSN and Sony Online accounts in 2011.

Four members of Lulz Security (LulzSec) have pleaded guilty to hacking more than 70 million PSN and Sony Online accounts in 2011, according to GameSpot's sister site CNET UK. Sony’s PlayStation Network was out of operation and inaccessible for three weeks in April 2011.

Aged 18 to 26, the four British men faced charges at Southwark Crown Court in London. The group’s main spokesperson, 20-year-old Jake Davis, also ran the LulzSec Twitter account.

Mustafa Al-Bassam (18), Ryan Ackroyd (26), and Ryan Cleary (21) also pleaded guilty. The group was arrested on charges relating to attacks on sites including the CIA and UK crime agencies, and claimed responsibility for being behind the hacking of more than 70 million PSN and Sony Online accounts in 2011.

The PlayStation Network outage occurred in April 2011 and saw Sony bring down its online gaming and retail services for approximately three weeks, costing the company an estimated $171.1 million. The outage occurred shortly after an attack by "hacktivist" group Anonymous, which insisted that its organisation had nothing to do with the extended downtime.

The four LulzSec members will be sentenced next month. The group previously targeted several gaming-related sites, including Minecraft, League of Legends, and Eve Online.
