Epix app hits PlayStation 3
Apr 2nd 2013, 14:21

Pay-TV video streaming service now available on Sony home console; PS Plus members get one free movie per month.

Premium cable channel Epix is now available through the PlayStation 3, Sony announced today. Members can stream more than 3,000 movies, including The Avengers and The Hunger Games, as well as comedy shows, boxing matches, and concerts.

An Epix app for PlayStation Vita is expected to be available "soon."

The app requires an authentication code from a television provider, meaning users who aren't already a paying Epix subscriber won't be able to access the content.

A free 14-day trial is available.

In addition, Epix will offer one movie per week that PlayStation Plus subscribers ($50 per year) can stream for free, even if they are not an Epix subscriber.

Epix launched for Xbox 360 during December 2011. Apps for the streaming service are also available for Android and iOS devices, as well as Google TV and Roku.

War Z hacked
Apr 2nd 2013, 13:53

Controversial zombie-shooter taken offline after hackers gain access to database with passwords, email addresses, more.

The War Z has been taken offline after hackers have gained access to the controversial zombie-shooter's forums and game databases, publisher OP Productions has confirmed.

Player passwords, email addresses, IP addresses, and any other information posted to the forums has been exposed. Payment information is not at risk, as all transactions take place through a third-party, OP Productions said in a statement.

"We are sorry to report that we have discovered that hackers gained access to our forum and game databases and the player data in those databases. We have launched a thorough investigation covering our entire system to determine the scope of the intrusion," the company said. "This investigation is ongoing and is our top priority. As part of the remediation and security enhancement process we will be taking the game and forums down temporarily."

It was not mentioned when the intrusion was first discovered.

OP Productions said all War Z game and forum passwords are encrypted, but that did not keep the hackers from accessing the data.

"There is a possibility that simple passwords can be obtained using brute force even if they are encrypted," reads a line from the statement. "Our research shows that many users are not using strong passwords."

The company urged all players to change their passwords immediately by visiting the War Z website or through the game launcher.

OP Productions is working with "outside experts and investigators" to help with the ongoing investigation and said it has committed "substantial resources" to that end.

"We are undertaking a full review and update of our servers and the services we use and adding additional security mechanisms," the company said. "In addition to this post, we are emailing all of our players just to make certain that everyone is informed and has been advised to change their passwords."

"This has been a humbling experience for us. While we all know that there is no guarantee of security on the Internet, our goal is to try our very best to protect your data. We sincerely apologize," the statement goes on. "We will update you on status as we make progress."

The War Z launched on Steam in December and was pulled just a day after release, after users reported numerous issues. Valve called its decision to originally publish the game a "mistake." The game was reinstated on Steam in late February.

Grand Theft Auto V box art revealed
Apr 2nd 2013, 13:11

[UPDATE] Rockstar Games releases official packshot for upcoming open-world action game.

[UPDATE]

Following the publication of this story, Rockstar Games released the official Grand Theft Auto V box art. It is embedded below.

The original story follows below

Rockstar Games will release the official Grand Theft Auto V box art this week, the company has confirmed. The confirmation came in response to questions about the legitimacy of a GTAV mural (below right) currently being produced in Manhattan.

Rockstar has confirmed this mural (from Instagram user helltones) is an officially sanctioned project and is in fact the final GTAV box art.

The mural will be completed in the coming days and Rockstar will release the box art through its blog later in the week.

GTAV launches September 17 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, while Wii U and PC versions are "up for consideration." The gameworld is reportedly larger than Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and Grand Theft Auto IV combined.

GameStop: PS4 2013 launch is global
Apr 2nd 2013, 12:41

Retailer claims Sony will release next-generation platform across the world later this year.

During GameStop's latest earnings call, executive vice president Mike Hogan claimed Sony plans to release the PlayStation 4 not only in one region this holiday season, but across the world.

"We know that Sony will introduce the PlayStation 4 globally in 2013, but we are still waiting to see what Microsoft's final plans are," Hogan said (via Seeking Alpha translation). "We have scenarios with one console introduction, as well as with two."

When Sony announced the PS4 in February, it said the platform would be available during holiday 2013, but did not note if that date was for North America or other regions.

The PlayStation 3 did not have a global launch, releasing in North America during November 2006, before coming to Europe in early 2007.

Microsoft is rumored to have its next-generation platform also on store shelves this holiday season. Though the company has yet to reveal its official plans, Microsoft is believed to hold a one-off media event this month to announce the Xbox 720.

Capcom reveals 'major' children's effort
Apr 2nd 2013, 11:57

Dead Rising publisher announces "expansive cross-media project" Gaist Crusher aimed at elementary school age boys for 3DS, comics, anime, music, and toys; no word on Western release.

Capcom announced today that it is beginning work on a "major" cross-media initiative for children's content in Japan. The first part of this push will be Gaist Crusher, a new 3DS game that focuses on "armors, transformations, and collections."

Gaist Crusher is an action game that features "high-grade" multiplayer that is likened to that of the Monster Hunter series. Capcom said the knowledge it has amassed producing content for children through the Mega Man series will benefit Gaist Crusher.

Elementary school age boys are the primary focus of the project, Capcom said.

Gaist Crusher will not only be a 3DS title, but Capcom has partnered with other firms to expand the game to fields like comics, anime, music, and toys. The game will be promoted in Japanese magazines, through music from Avex Entertainment Inc., and with toys called "Gaimetal" from Bandai Co.

"Overall, this will be an expansive cross-media project," Capcom said in a statement. "With the number of children in Japan declining, Capcom plans to use this project to attract interest in new brands and firmly establish these brands by continuously launching a diverse range of content."

DayZ console port 'almost certain'
Apr 2nd 2013, 11:47

Zombie survival game should see life on consoles, provided PC version is a success.

DayZ creator Dean 'Rocket' Hall has said a console version of the open-world zombie survival game is "almost certain" provided the upcoming standalone release of the game on PC isn't a sales disaster.

"Certainly I think if we don't, for want of a better word 'f**k up,' the PC release then I would say a console port is almost certain," said Hall in an interview with The Escapist.

"I know a lot of people get really hot and bothered about it. Like, I'm not a console gamer, I'm a PC gamer, but I don't think it necessarily has to hurt things."

Hall also revealed that he's been in talks with an interested Sony. "It appears to be the kind of game that Sony are interested in, I think we just have to wait and see," he said.

"We've talked and met with Sony, and they're very - you know, they're obviously interested."

DayZ is being worked on by a relatively tiny team at Czech developer Bohemia Interactive, and the oft-updated mod has become hugely popular on PC. Sony, meanwhile, has promised that the upcoming PlayStation 4 will be more open and friendly to developers.

The standalone version of DayZ has yet to receive a firm release date, but has been recently shown off by Hall in multiple video diaries.
