Oct 8th 2013, 04:10

Dedicated servers will be available for all versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts.

First-person shooter Call of Duty: Ghosts will feature dedicated servers for online multiplayer on current-generation and next-generation consoles, as well as for the PC.

The news was announced by Mark Rubin, executive producer at developer Infinity Ward. Posting on Twitlonger, a service which allows for extended posts on Twitter, Rubin elaborated on Infinity Ward's plans for dedicated servers.

The post details that Call of Duty: Ghosts "will be using a hybrid system of dedicated servers and listen servers".

Rubin cited the inclusion of dedicated servers as part of an "overall plan to improve connectivity".

EMS One North America Grand Finals lends itself to controversy
Oct 8th 2013, 00:50

A close and controversial series between Take 5 and Evil Geniuses in the EMS One North America Grand finals has the Dota 2 community split on the results.

Take 5 beat Evil Geniuses yesterday in the Dota 2 Raidcall EMS One Fall American Grand Finals. The series, a best of five that went to match point, granted Take 5 a birth in the Raidcall EMS Fall Offline Finals in Poland later this year.

Though the series itself was a nailbiter, factors outside of the series may have been more discussed than the games have been.

Take 5 and Evil Geniuses have a rivalry in making. Take 5’s captain, Jimmy ’DeMoN’ Ho, was removed from the Evil Geniuses lineup last month, having spent two years on the team.

While both parties have gone on record saying the split was amicable, banter on Twitter, albeit presumably friendly on the whole, indicates that these are important matches with pride on the line for both groups.

Evil Geniuses’ new roster has had a great start, convincingly defeating other big teams like Dignitas and Rattlesnake International, but they have struggled against the Take 5 squad. Evil Geniuses has fallen short on both occasions they've played them.

Take 5’s ambitions as a team, at least initially, have seemed remarkably low, much lower than Evil Geniuses, and fans were inclined to give Evil Geniuses the edge going into both matches. Dota 2 betting website Dota 2 Lounge indicated the Evil Geniuses team was largely favored going into yesterday's match.

Ho told GameSpot, ’Our main goal was MLG Columbus. We just kept getting invited to other tournaments.’

In contrast, Evil Geniuses captain Clinton ’Fear’ Loomis told GameSpot when announcing his team’s new roster, ’Dedication and commitment are what I've been looking for in teammates for a very long time and I feel like I found the four perfect guys to fit that bill.’

The disparity in dedication, whether real or perceived, paired with the Ho v. Evil Geniuses rivalry, again whether real or perceived, has been the low hanging fruit for those looking to criticize Evil Geniuses after their losses.

Take 5 also used Jerry ’EGM’ Lundkvist, from the $1,430,000 International 3 winning team Alliance, as a stand in for the series. His ringing for Take 5, which was jokingly referred to by the series' broadcasters as the ’million dollar stand in,’ has led the competitive Dota 2 community to raise their collective eyebrows for a handful of reasons.

Lundkvist is on the permanent roster for another team participating in the same league. While it’s not unusual to see inter-team cameos in professional Dota 2 online tournaments, some fans are uncomfortable with the notion of players playing for two teams in the same event. This particular instance grows further interesting when you consider that Lundkvist’s team, Alliance, is managed by the same group of people that manage Evil Geniuses.

In this case Lundkvist played a proactive role in stopping his sister team from making their way to a major offline finals in match that he didn’t need to play in.

This further adds to to Evil Geniuses and Take 5 beef.

Take 5 will play for their part of $35,000 at the season’s offline finals taking place in Katowice, Poland later this fall. At the time of publication the dates of the finals have not been released by the events organizer. Though the public has speculated that the team, who still lacks a sponsor, might not be able to attend, Ho confided to GameSpot that the only variable that would keep them from going was an academic responsibility from one of their players.

The next time we might have the opportunity to watch Evil Geniuses and Take 5 do battle is in the Prime Dota 2 Cup on October 17th. Take 5 would need to beat their first round opponent Dignitas and Evil Geniuses would need to beat their first round opponent Key D2 for them to meet in the second round.

Ouya hits 25,000 registered developers
Oct 8th 2013, 00:26

Platform reaches "major milestone" four months after launch; store now has more than 465 games and apps available to download.

The Android-powered microconsole Ouya now has more than 25,000 registered developers, the company announced today, heralding the news as a "major milestone" for the platform.

It was not announced how many developers are actively creating content for the system.

In addition, the company said the Ouya's store is now filled with more than 465 games and apps for download, four months after the console's official release in June.

Microsoft on Xbox One -- "We do not collect information to share or sell"
Oct 7th 2013, 23:48

[UPDATE] Marketing executive Yusuf Mehdi hints at opportunity for Microsoft to provide Xbox data to marketers; Microsoft provides comment, says "You are fully in control of your personal data."

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb provided a statement on the matter through Twitter.

"FYI: We are seeking a correction to the Ad Age story that quotes Yusuf," he wrote. "Tl;dr We do not collect information to share or sell. You are fully in control of your personal data. Your privacy is important to us."

The original story is below.

One of Microsoft's Xbox marketing leaders Yusuf Mehdi has opened up on the advertising potential for the soon-to-be-released Xbox One console. Speaking during the recent Association of National Advertisers Masters of Marketing Conference, as reported by AdAge, Mehdi hinted at the possibility of making Xbox data available to advertisers.

"We are trying to bridge some of the world between online and offline," he said. "That's a little bit of a holy grail in terms of how you understand the consumer in that 360 degrees of their life."

"We have a pretty unique position at Microsoft because of what we do with digital, as well as more and more with television because of Xbox," he added. "It's early days, but we're starting to put that together in more of a unifying way, and hopefully at some point we can start to offer that to advertisers broadly."

Through its Kinect camera, the Xbox One will have a window into players' living rooms. This opens up a "huge new trove of data" about how people are interacting with TV ads, according to one marketer who spoke under the condition of anonymity.

"It could have a big impact on [advertising pricing]," he said, given the Xbox One's ability to determine if people are paying attention to advertisements or how their bodies respond to promotional material.

Last week, Xbox director of product planning Albert Penello said that this kind of biometric data does not leave the local Xbox One console unless people allow it to and that Kinect was not designed with advertising in mind. Still, the advertising potential for the Xbox One, should consumers allow this data to be shared, would be unprecedented, AdAge writes.

"If even a fraction of likely Xbox One users could be persuaded to share data, the technology could create the world's largest panel for measuring biometric responses to advertising."

The Xbox One launches on November 22 for $500.

Curt Schilling holding estate sale this weekend
Oct 7th 2013, 22:14

Former MLB pitcher and 38 Studios founder to sell home furnishings, including Kingdoms of Amalur items; home itself up for sale at $3 million.

Former MLB pitcher and founder of failed game company 38 Studios Curt Schilling will hold an estate sale at his Medfield, Mass. home this weekend, according to CBS Boston.

The estate sale will be managed by Consign Works and features furniture, decor, and other various furnishing from his 7-bedroom, 8,000 square-foot home in eastern Massachusetts.

Regarding Kingdoms of Amalur, up for sale will be a 38 Studios drafting table and various posters related to the game. The estate sale takes place this Saturday, October 12, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

38 Studios went bankrupt in the summer of 2012, leaving Rhode Island on the hook for millions related to a $75 million loan that saw the company move from Massachusetts to Rhode Island in 2010. Schilling has said that he lost $50 million of his own money as part of the company's insolvency.

Schilling's home itself is also up for sale with an asking price of $3 million. The home is located on a private road and features 27 acres of land, a pool, sand volleyball court, ice skating rink, and putting green.

In addition, a 38 Studios liquidation auction will take place next month. Featured in the auction will be a number of intellectual property assets in the Amalur fantasy universe. These include the massively multiplayer game Project Copernicus, sequel rights to Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, and merchandise rights and revenue streams associated with the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC versions of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

Also featured in the auction are intellectual property rights for Big Huge Games franchises, including Rise of Nations, Rise of Legends, and Catan.

Activision countersues Worlds Inc.
Oct 7th 2013, 22:13

Call of Duty publisher files patent infringement lawsuit against Worlds Inc. and Worlds Online Inc. over "Worlds Player" software.

Activision Publishing has countersued Worlds Inc. and Worlds Online Inc. months after the latter claimed the Call of Duty publisher infringed on a patent it holds for online worlds.

Activision's countersuit claims that Worlds has infringed, and continues to infringe, U.S. Patent No. 6,014,145 and U.S. Patent No. 5,883,628, which relate to 3D worlds.

Patent No. 6,014,145 reads, "Navigation with optimum viewpoints in three-dimensional workspace interactive displays having three-dimensional objects with collision barriers," while Patent No. 5,883,628 covers "Climability: property for objects in 3-D virtual environments."

The contested product is Worlds Inc. software called "Worlds Player," which is a 3D content and technology platform.

Worlds Inc. originally filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Activision Blizzard, Blizzard Entertainment, and Activision Publishing on March 30, 2012.

"Technologies created by Worlds have helped the businesses of virtual worlds gaming and the sale of virtual goods to grow into a multi-billion dollar industry," Worlds Inc. CEO Thom Kidrin said at the time. "While we are pleased to see that the gaming industry and its rapidly growing customer base have enthusiastically embraced our patented technologies, we deserve fair compensation for their use."

That lawsuit, filed in Massachusetts, is pending.
