Maxis considering mod support for SimCity
Oct 2nd 2013, 05:37

User Generated Content guidelines to be finalised over the next few weeks.

Developer Maxis has announced its stance on User Generated Content (UGC) created for its urban planning simulation game SimCity.

Posting on the official Electronic Arts (EA) forum, staff member MaxisKane announced the first draft of the UGC guidelines and invited fans to participate in the discussion.

According to the post, official members of the SimCity development team will be active in the thread for "the next few weeks" to gather feedback. A final version of the official guidelines will then be created.

The first draft of the User Generation Content guidelines outline what constitutes acceptable standards for content, including the replacement of art assets. It also states that UGC which effects multiplayer games and features are disallowed.

SimCity's launch in March was beset by server woes, though this has not kept the game from selling more than 1.6 million copies since launch. Publisher EA recently announced an expansion titled Cities of Tomorrow, the first add-on for SimCity. Cities of Tomorrow is scheduled for release on November 12 for PC and Mac.

Warcraft movie set for release Dec. 18, 2015
Oct 1st 2013, 23:31

Blizzard Entertainment confirms release date for upcoming movie based on fantasy series from Legendary Pictures.

The World of Warcraft movie will be released in theaters on December 18, 2015, Blizzard Entertainment announced today.

We’re pleased to announce that @Legendary Pictures’ WARCRAFT will be released by @UniversalPics on December 18, 2015.

— World of Warcraft (@Warcraft) October 1, 2013

The film is being directed by Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) and could feature In Bruges actor Colin Farrell and There Will Be Blood's Paul Dano in lead roles.

The film's plot remains largely under wraps, though a past report suggests the movie will feature "time travel and alien worlds."

"The opportunity to do something like Warcraft is a once-in-a-lifetime thing. You hope that you're going to get the chance to make films where you really get to delve into fantasy," Jones said during San Diego Comic-Con in July, where a teaser for the movie was shown. "And with Warcraft, I actually get to create a world and there's not that many filmmakers who get the chance to start from scratch and build something that big. I know how lucky I am and I am so excited to do it."

At the time, Jones also briefly discussed the challenge of creating a film based on a franchise that millions of people the world over are already connected to.

"I'm well aware of it. And a lot of people who are my friends play and I used to play. I'm very aware of what the goal is there to achieve," he said.

The big-screen adaptation of Blizzard Entertainment's fantasy series was announced during E3 2006. Spider-Man director Sam Raimi was at one point attached to the film, though he would later drop out, claiming Blizzard "mismanaged" the film.

The Warcraft film is believed to have a budget that exceeds $100 million.

Production on the film will begin in January. Blood Diamond and K-PAX writer Charles Leavitt authored the most recent version of the World of Warcraft film's script.

Wii production ending in Japan soon
Oct 1st 2013, 21:25

Nintendo will stop manufacturing aging console in island nation soon; no word on other territories.

Nintendo will cease production of the industry-shaking Wii console in Japan in the near future, the company said today in an update on its website.

A Nintendo of Europe representative told Eurogamer that the production halt only relates to Japan, at least for now. Details about production schedules for Europe and North America have not been disclosed.

A Nintendo of America representative was not immediately available to comment.

The Wii was released in 2006 and has sold over 100 million units worldwide to date, millions more than the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The system introduced motion-controls as a primary means of play, something competitors Sony and Microsoft would adopt later on.

Nintendo has shifted more than 872 million pieces of software for the Wii. The company stopped making games for the console last year.

Its successor the Wii U launched last year and has struggled thus far, selling 3.61 million units to date, below Nintendo's internal expectations. Nintendo implemented a price cut for the console two weeks ago, dropping the MSRP for the 32GB model to $300.
