God of War II director returns to Sony
Aug 9th 2013, 17:30

Cory Barlog back at Sony Santa Monica where he is assembling an Ocean's 11-style cast of developers to work on "freaking huge" game.

God of War II director Cory Barlog has returned to Sony Santa Monica, he revealed in a new PlayStation Blog post.

After spending time working with Crystal Dynamics, Avalanche Studios, Mad Max director George Miller, and Star Wars creator George Lucas, Barlog said he was "ready to come back home."

"There I would use my newly honed powers of awesome to create something that will rock the free world," Barlog said.

Barlog would not go into specifics regarding his current project at Sony Santa Monica, but said he is hiring an Ocean's 11-style cast of developers to work on a "freaking huge" game.

"If you are a freaking rock star unafraid to roll your sleeves up and take risks, reading this thinking that your current digs are feeling…well…a bit small, a bit dull and in need of some excitement--you need to contact me at Sony Santa Monica," Barlog said.

Barlog ended his note saying he will continue working hard to make games so long as consumers promise to buy them. "If you don't, God will kill a puppy," he said.

All PS Vitas $199 at Target August 18-24 - Report
Aug 9th 2013, 17:06

Leaked advertisement from retailer Target states both versions of Sony's portable getting price cut later this month.

All PlayStation Vita systems will be marked down to $199 at Target beginning August 18 and running through August 24, according to a leaked Target advertisement obtained by Blu-ray Forums.

The ad specifies that "all PS Vita game systems" will be marked down. The handhelds currently retail for $250 for the Wi-Fi version and $300 for the 3G model.

Neither Sony nor Target were immediately available to comment.

The PS Vita received a price cut in Japan in February, but Sony said in February that no such price drop would be extended to North America due to exchange rates and other factors.

Decisions about price drops are made on a region-by-region basis, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida said at the time.

Ubisoft files trademark for Just Dance toys
Aug 9th 2013, 15:58

Publisher's new trademark application covers toys and playthings like dolls and action figures based on dancing game series.

Ubisoft has filed a new trademark application for Just Dance covering an assortment of toys and playthings, including dolls, action figures, plush, playsets, and toy vehicles, among other things.

The trademark application was filed August 5 with the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). A Ubisoft representative told GameSpot, "We have no news to share are this time."

The next entry in the Just Dance series is Just Dance 2014, which will release on current- and next-generation platforms beginning in October 2013. The game, announced during Ubisoft's E3 2013 briefing, features music from Psy, One Direction, and Nicki Minaj.

Last year's game, Just Dance 4, shipped over 8 million copies, while the series has moved over 25 million units to date.

Below will only be a timed exclusive on Xbox One, confirms dev
Aug 9th 2013, 15:45

Capybara Games confirms eventual multiplatform release but says "working with Microsoft Studios has been great."

Below, which was announced by Microsoft's Phil Spencer during the company's E3 2013 press conference, will only be a timed-exclusive on Xbox One, developer Capybara Games has confirmed.

Writing on the developer's website, Capybara's Nathan Vella and Kris Piotrowski said "It might seem like ages ago, but E3 was crazy for us. Phil Spencer walked out on stage at Microsoft…s press conference in a Capy shirt and introduced a teaser trailer for our newest game, Below."

"Later that week we showed another trailer for Below as a part of Horizon (which was the greatest). The reaction from fans, press and colleagues was amazing--we…re so glad that you…re all as excited about Below as we are."

Vella and Piotrowski said that some confusion remained about the roguelike game's availability, however. "Because of the way the game was announced and discussed in the press, there was naturally a little bit of confusion after the dust settled. And that confusion stuck around."

"Like many games on stage at E3, Below will be available on the Xbox One first," said the pair. "Then, after a period of time, Capy can bring it elsewhere. It…s always been this way."

The duo also praised the working relationship with Microsoft Studios, and said confirming that the game would eventually go multiplatform shouldn't be seen as a dig at Microsoft or the Xbox One.

"We…ve said it many times before, but it is worth repeating: working with Microsoft Studios has been great, and they deserve real kudos for putting our dreamy roguelike-inspired game of exploration and discovery in the spotlight at E3… and we are certain they…ll continue to do more of that going forward."

"This clarification is about answering our fans, and shouldn…t reflect negatively on Microsoft or Xbox One--they…ve been the biggest Capy supporters out there (and also lets face it: Titanfall and Halo are going to be crazy delicious game magic). The Xbox 360 has been a great home for marquee downloadable games, and we believe this is something that will continue, and grow, over the years on Xbox One."

Aug 9th 2013, 15:25

A demo for Platinum Games' upcoming Wii U action game The Wonderful 101 is now available in the European and Japanese eShops, the developer announced today during a Nintendo Direct presentation.

The demo will be released in the United States later. "Our fans in the US will have to wait a bit more, but don…t start reading any long books," Platinum Games said in a statement.

The Wonderful 101 launches August 23 in Europe and September 15 in North America. In the game, players explore various stages and recruit citizens to join their army of heroes. The more heroes a player gathers, the greater their Special Morph Powers will be.

Sony not expecting PS3-like losses for PS4
Aug 9th 2013, 14:45

CFO Masaru Kato says company's investment for next-generation console is "much, much smaller" than last model.

For the PlayStation 4, Sony is not expecting to incur losses on the same level it did with the PlayStation 3, according to Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House.

"We will not generate anything like the losses we did for the PlayStation 3," House told Bloomberg.

According to the report, Sony lost more than $3.5 billion in 2007 and 2008 after the PS3 launched for $600 in 2006. CEO Kazuo Hirai has said the system did not become profitable until late 2011.

Sony aims to avoid PS3-like losses for the PS4 in part due to a smaller investment in the PS4 relative to the PS3, CFO Masaru Kato said on a recent earnings call.

Kato said Sony spent "hundreds of millions" in designing the PS3's chip set and "billions" on semiconductor fabrication because these technologies were not readily available.

"There were no manufacturing capacity or technology to manufacture these chipsets. So the amount of investment that went into PS3 was quite big," Kato said.

By comparison, Kato said the PS4 is a much "lighter" platform in terms of investment due to its PC-like architecture.

"At the core, we are taking off-the-shelf technology available and we are putting our proprietary technology around that core chipset," Kato said. "The amount of investment is much, much smaller. I cannot give you the absolute amount."

The PS4 launches worldwide this holiday for $399/€399/£349, a full $100 below Microsoft's Xbox One.

Sony is no longer guaranteeing that PS4 orders in the United Kingdom will be available on launch day.

Sony: Polls show 80 percent of customers prefer PS4
Aug 9th 2013, 14:30

CFO Masaru Kato says majority of potential customers prefer PlayStation 4 over Xbox One, Wii U, or other competing products.

During Sony's latest earnings call, CFO Masaru Kato said some polls indicate 80 percent of potential customers prefer the PlayStation 4 over competition like the Xbox One and Wii U.

"This is very encouraging," Kato said on the call. "And we are doing our best to secure enough chipsets and capacity to" meet demand at launch.

He added that the system's showing at E3 this year was very positive for Sony.

Kato did not give any details regarding the specific polls he referenced during the call. A Sony representative could not be reached for comment.

The PS4 launches worldwide this holiday for $399/€399/£349, a full $100 below Microsoft's Xbox One.

Sony is no longer guaranteeing that PS4 orders in the United Kingdom will be available on launch day.

Pokemon X and Y to include temporary mega evolutions
Aug 9th 2013, 14:27

Certain Pokemon will be able to temporarily mega evolve during battle in Pokemon X and Y, confirms The Pokemon Company.

Update: The Pokemon Company has confirmed that mega evolutions will be coming to Pokemon X and Y, and has released a trailer detailing the feature. Applicable Pokemon will require a rare mega stone, however, and Nintendo will distribute a Torchic holding a Blazikenite mega stone over Wi-Fi during the game's launch.

Additionally, Pokemon X and Y will allow players to boost a Pokemon's stats with Super Training, which features a range of mini-games, or with Core Training, which allows Pokemon to get stronger without player input.

Original Story: Pokemon X and Y will include temporary mega evolutions for certain Pokemon during battle, according to a new report by leading Pokemon fansite Serebii.

The information was first posted in Japanese comic CoroCoro, and includes scans of MegaMewtwo, MegaBlaziken, MegaLucario, MegaMawile, MegaAbsol, and MegaAmpharos.

Serebii's report says that Pokemon can only Mega Evolve when holding a Mega Stone, with the temporary form giving a temporary new appearance and boosts to statistics. The Mega evolutions are somehow connected to the game's Master Tower.

Alongside the Mega Evolutions, Pokemon X and Y will feature new multiplayer features, 5-on-1 horde battles, an entirely new region, and a rideable Pokemon.

Pokemon X and Y will launch exclusively for Nintendo 3DS on October 12.

Xbox One's Killer Instinct "not some hacked-off remake," Microsoft says
Aug 9th 2013, 13:46

Executive Phil Spencer says upcoming title will be "great fighting game built for a live ecosystem," not a "cash-in."

The upcoming free-to-play Killer Instinct for Xbox One is "not some hacked-off remake," according to Microsoft Game Studios corporate vice president Phil Spencer.

Speaking with OXM, Spencer said Microsoft has appropriated the necessary resources to the game to make it one that "people fall in love with.

"We are building this to be a great fighting game. This is not some hacked-off remake," Spencer said. "We're working with Mad Catz on control, we've got Rare people looking at it. We've got people focusing on how it's going to play because we want to build a great fighting game built for a live ecosystem. This isn't going to cash in on the name; it's going to be a real frontline game that people fall in love with."

As for why Microsoft chose to bring back Killer Instinct in the first place, Spencer said the reasons are numerous. First, he explained Microsoft was passionate about the series and the right Rare creative talent--like Ken Lobb--were available to "make sure it's tried and true."

Another reason was because Microsoft saw an opportunity to leverage some of the Xbox One's new features, including asynchronous matchmaking. This system will set up a new match for players while they are playing their current game. Comments on social media also played a part, Spencer said.

"I won't say the things on Twitter had no impact on it," Spencer said. "I wanted to bring back something and Killer Instinct just seemed like the right thing."

Killer Instinct was announced during Microsoft's briefing at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June. The game will be available as a free download with fighter Jago, while players will need to pay for additional characters to expand their rosters. Pricing has not been announced.

The game is currently in development at Double Helix Games. No release date has been announced.

Wargaming: "We will push free-to-play hard"
Aug 9th 2013, 13:08

CEO Victor Kislyi says Microsoft needed convincing about free-to-play viability on consoles, says the company will understand "when they see the first check..."

Microsoft needed convincing about the viability of free-to-play games on consoles, according to Wargaming CEO Victor Kislyi, whose company is bringing World of Tanks to Xbox 360 this summer.

"It did take a lot of our efforts to convince Microsoft that free-to-play was something worth doing on Xbox," Kislyi told Eurogamer. "But it will be a historical moment when the first huge free-to-play game arrives on consoles."

The first free-to-play game on Xbox 360 was last October's Happy Wars, which has attracted more than 2 million players to date. Kislyi believes free-to-play's arrival on consoles is the start of something big.

"It's the beginning of a new era," he said. "And Microsoft will understand that when they see the first check…"

Kislyi also addressed consumer reaction to free-to-play games, saying that the perception of such titles is changing and Wargaming isn't backing away from the model anytime soon.

"When we and Riot games started evangelising free-to-play in the West we were met with a huge amount of resistance from both the media and consumers," Kislyi said. "But that is changing. We will push free-to-play hard. No choice."

World of Tanks for Xbox 360 is not exactly free-to-play, as players must have an Xbox Live Gold subscription ($5/month) to play the game. Kisyli is unhappy about this requirement. The game is expected to launch in full this summer.

Also in the interview, Kisyli revealed player statistics for the PC version of World of Tanks. He said the average player spends 3 hours in the game per day, while the global average monthly spending per user is $7. Japanese gamers spend the most, Kisyli said, followed by players in the United States and China.

Sakurai: "Players don't know how hard we work"
Aug 9th 2013, 12:42

Smash Bros. designer Masahiro Sakurai adds that the pain of the "life-changing struggle" of development goes away with time.

Smash Bros. lead designer Masahiro Sakurai believes gamers don't fully understand how much time and effort is invested into a project like Nintendo's iconic fighting game series.

"The players don't know about how hard we work. That's not a problem because that's the case for any product, but it's important to remember that you can't take anything for granted," Sakurai said in his latest Famitsu post, translated by Nintendo Life.

His comments came as part of a columna regarding the development process for the Smash Bros. series, specifically the amount of work that goes into creating each game's roster. Sakurai has spoken of this challenge before, saying in June that choosing the roster is stressful "almost to the brink of death."

In his Famitsu post this week, Sakurai said much the same thing, but explained any pain he feels during development is eased over time.

"Projects take a while, and you run into difficult and painful times," Sakurai said. "Some people have to bow out of it. To be honest, I've sometimes thought about what I'm earning for myself, going through all this life-changing struggle. But the pain I feel at the time goes away over time, and yet the game itself always remains. Players talk about the fun and so forth behind the game for years to come, and they still play it."

Sakurai added that he is often asked by media if he feels pressure to deliver when creating a high-profile project like the new Smash Bros. game for Wii U and 3DS.

"Like I've written before, on a personal level, I don't feel anything like pressure. It's really fun work," Sakurai said. "Sometimes you have to resign yourself to the fact that things will work out the way they're meant to work out. But you need to funnel your regrets to the next project and work as hard as you can on that. The pain goes away, but your work always remains."

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. for 3DS are expected to launch in 2014. There will be no cross-platform play between the two.

Earlier this week, Nintendo confirmed Luigi as a playable character for the game. He joins previously announced characters Pikmin & Olimar, Villager, Mario, Donkey Kong, Mega Man, Wii Fit Trainer, Link, Samus, Kirby, Fox, Pikachu, Bowser, and Pit.

For more on the new Smash Bros. game, check out GameSpot's interview with Sakurai.
