MLG Columbus "not planning" to feature StarCraft II
Aug 8th 2013, 16:10

"Folks who love SC2 have tons to watch," says MLG CEO on Twitter, confirming that Blizzard's StarCraft II is not currently planned to feature in upcoming eSports tournament.

eSports organiser Major League Gaming has announced it is not currently planning to feature Blizzard's StarCraft II at its upcoming MLG Columbus event.

The Columbus, Ohio event is scheduled to run from November 22 through November 24.

"Just so folks know--we are currently not planning to run SC2 at [Columbus]," said MLG CEO Sundance DiGiovanni on Twitter. "Should that change we'll let you know via official channels."

GameSpot has contacted Blizzard and MLG for comment.

The most recent MLG event, which took place in June, featured tournaments in StarCraft II, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, and League of Legends.

"Folks who love SC2 have tons to watch," added DiGiovanni. "[North American Star League] is still there + [Blizzard's World Championship Series] isn't going anywhere. Game just doesn't fit into our [Columbus] plans."

MLG announced in June that it would stop working with Blizzard to produce the North American qualifiers for this year's second StarCraft II World Championship Series. “After coordinating on WCS America Season 1 and careful consideration, we have decided to transition away from operation of WCS America and refocus efforts on producing our own eSports competitions,“ said DiGiovanni in a statement at the time.

Blizzard's own finals for the 2013 StarCraft II World Championship Series will take place on November 8 and 9 during Blizzcon 2013 in Anaheim, California.

ESPN survey: College football players want to be compensated for video games
Aug 8th 2013, 15:13

Survey of 92 college football players finds 65 percent feel they should be compensated if their likeness is used in a video game.

A new ESPN The Magazine survey of college football players found that 65 percent believe they should be compensated if their likeness is used in a video game.

The survey is based on anonymous responses from 92 college football players. The survey was conducted in July and published in the latest issue of ESPN The Magazine.

A representative for Electronic Arts declined to comment.

When the NCAA announced in July that it would not renew its contract with EA Sports, the group said it has "never licensed the use of current student-athlete names, images, or likeness to EA."

Not all agree that EA's NCAA games don't include accurate depictions of players. Former Arizona State University and University of Nebraska starting quarterback Sam Keller filed a lawsuit against EA in May 2009 claiming just that.

Keller and his legal team, Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP, contend that EA's NCAA games use athletes' likenesses, including accurate depictions of height, age, and weight, without permission.

A United States court of appeals recently rejected EA and NCAA's latest appeal over the use of collegiate athletes' likenesses in the publisher's games. The court dismissed EA's claim that the practice of using an athlete's likeness was protected under the First Amendment.

EA will continue to publish college football games--without the NCAA's name and marks--as part of a new deal with the Collegiate Licensing Company. An all-new college football game is currently in development for next-generation consoles.

Iwata explains why Nintendo won't release its games on other platforms
Aug 8th 2013, 14:20

Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata says the idea of bringing Nintendo games to other platforms would only be good for the company's "short-term" profits.

Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has emphasised his staunch opposition to the idea of bringing Nintendo games to other platforms, saying that such a move would only be good for "short-term" profits.

Speaking to CVG, Iwata said he was focused on Nintendo's long-term goals. "If I was to take responsibility for the company for just the next one or two years, and if I was not concerned about the long-term future of Nintendo at all, it might make sense for us to provide our important franchises for other platforms, and then we might be able to gain some short-term profit," he said.

"However, I'm really responsible for the long-term future of Nintendo as well, so I would never think about providing our precious resources for other platforms at all."

Earlier this year games industry legend Ian Livingstone said Nintendo needs to bring its titles to other platforms. In July, Nintendo explained why it wouldn't bring characters like Mario to mobile.

Iwata continued by saying that Nintendo is a unique company because it develops software and hardware in tandem. "What I believe is that Nintendo is a very unique company, because it does its business by designing and introducing people to hardware and software--by integrating them, we can be unique. And because we have hardware and software developers in the same building, they stimulate each other," he said.

"And those kinds of conditions have enabled us to create something that no other companies can create. Those kinds of backgrounds are there behind the fact that such a number of great Nintendo franchises exist, and those great franchises always shine for people around the world."

"I would say that the people's expectations about what will come next from Nintendo is becoming higher and higher," he said. "So we are facing more challenges than ever--that's true.

"But it's nothing new for Nintendo. Nintendo is a company that has never stopped progressing, and when it comes to the fan-base, of course, we have to sustain that, but we are always trying to expand that."

Yesterday, Nintendo confirmed it was selling its Wii U hardware for a loss.

Xbox exec on Crackdown 3: "I'm going to bite my tongue"
Aug 8th 2013, 14:18

Microsoft Game Studios VP Phil Spencer says he believes in the unannounced project; Xbox 360 support to continue for "years."

In a new OXM interview, Microsoft Game Studios corporate vice president Phil Spencer was asked about the possibility of Crackdown 3, to which he replied, "I'm going to bite my tongue."

The interviewer commented, "We still believe!" and Spencer added, "I do too. I do too."

A Crackdown agility orb appeared during Microsoft's Xbox One reveal event in May and Spencer said a month later that this was not accidental, adding that the series could live on in the form of a cloud-based next-generation game.

Spencer previously commented that he would like to see the Crackdown series return with the "right team and time." Original Crackdown developer Realtime Worlds has since closed, while Crackdown 2 studio Ruffian Games has confirmed it is not working on Crackdown 3.

Also in the OXM interview, Spencer commented on how long Microsoft plans to support the Xbox 360 now that the Xbox One is on the horizon.

"Years," Spencer said. "Last generation was different for us, we moved pretty quickly. This time, you will see us staying committed to the Xbox 360. I think it's a great platform. In certain areas, like trying to switch apps quickly, it shows that it was built in a different era, but in terms of the price point, the content library--I don't have the stats, but I bet it's the largest content library ever created in the history of the game space. So it's a great time even now to get into the Xbox 360 ecosystem. It's something we'll remain committed to on the content side as well as the platform itself."

The Xbox One launches in November for $499/€499/£429.

Military shooter Arma III will release worldwide on September 12, developer Bohemia Interactive announced today. The game will be available in digital and physical stores on that date.

To mark the countdown to launch, the Arma III development team will host a Twitch TV livestream on Saturday, August 10 at 17.00 UTC from the company's headquarters in Prague where they will show off a "sneak peek" at the game's release package.

Xbox One unboxed
Aug 8th 2013, 13:01

Microsoft unwraps Day One Edition featuring 853mhz GPU; chat headset, 4K HDMI cable included with all units.

Microsoft today posted an unboxing video for the Xbox One, three months before the next-generation console arrives on store shelves this November.

The console shown in the video is one of the first production units, Microsoft said, adding that fewer than 20 exist in the world. The system features the new 853mhz GPU announced last week.

The unboxing video, available below, is for a Day One Edition of the system, including a special Day One package, a uniquely branded controller with chrome D-pad, and a Day One digital achievement.

As was previously announced, the Xbox One itself sports a 500GB hard drive, slot load Blu-ray drive, IR blaster port, HDMI input and output connectors, a S/PDIF interface, three USB 3.0 ports, wired and wireless network support, and a Kensington Security Slot.

Microsoft also discussed the Xbox One's new chat headset. Previously, it was announced that it would not be included with the standard system. However, this has now changed and every unit will include a headset.

The chat headset offers "3x the sampling rate of the Xbox 360," Microsoft said. It is also described as "super lightweight"--weighing in at 44 grams. The headset also features a padded earpiece that can be worn on the left or right year, as well as a rotating mic.

Xbox One director of product planning Albert Penello added that the HDMI cable included with the system is a Category 2 HDMI cable and is rated for 1080p, 3D, and 4K. As for the system's built-in wireless, it is A/B/G/N and supports dual-band 2.4ghz and 5ghz frequencies, compared to the Xbox 360's single-band A/B/G/N at 2.4ghz.

The Xbox One launches in November for $499/€499/£429.

UK gaming retailers report worst month in history
Aug 8th 2013, 12:55

July 2013 saw just over a million sales across UK gaming retailers, a 33.3 percent year-on-year drop.

July 2013 has seen UK gaming retailers report their worst month in history.

Citing official chart company Gfk Chart-Track, MCV reports that gaming retailers in the UK sold just over one million games last month. Sales are 40.4 percent lower than in June, and 33.3 percent lower than July 2012.

Few high-profile game releases were cited as a cause for the poor sales, with only three new releases making the top 50 sales chart: Pikmin 3, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, and Dynasty Warriors 8.

Sony's PlayStation 3 exclusive The Last of Us was the best-selling game of the month, followed by Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition and Animal Crossing: New Leaf.

In the coming months, retailers will be looking to the release of Grand Theft Auto V in September and the launch of the next-generation consoles later in the year will buoy sales.

All in all, UK gaming retailers reported around £23 million ($35.6 million) from game sales.

PS4 doesn't require PlayStation Plus for Share feature
Aug 8th 2013, 12:41

Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida confirms players won't need a paid membership to share screenshots and video like Xbox One requires.

The PlayStation 4's Share functionality, which allows users to capture and share gameplay screenshots and videos, will not require a PlayStation Plus subscription.

President of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida broke the news on Twitter today. Check out his tweets to fans below.

@JasonBassant no, thanks :D

— Shuhei Yoshida (@yosp) August 8, 2013

Microsoft confirmed yesterday that the Xbox One's similar Game DVR functionality is restricted to Xbox Live Gold members.

Though PS4 gamers won't need to have a PS Plus subscription to share screenshots and videos, the "Share" functionality will be limited. Yoshida said in May that may be restrictions placed on the footage gamers wish to upload using the service.

"There will be parts of a game that the maker does not want people to be able to see. For example, on Vita, developers can in certain scenes disable the feature that lets users take a screenshot, and (the Share function) will have a similar mechanism. The creator may not want to make video of the final boss sharable, for instance," he said at the time.

In addition, a PS Plus subscription ($50/year) will be required to play PS4 games online. Currently, PlayStation 3 gamers can play online for free. Yoshida explained in June that the requirement is a response to the additional investment Sony has had to make on the network side.

The PS4 launches worldwide this holiday for $399/€399/£349.

Payday 2 turns a profit from preorders alone
Aug 8th 2013, 11:00

Starbreeze Studios CEO says “not only have we managed to deliver a desirable product in Payday 2 but also executed a promotion that few companies of our size can."

Starbreeze Studio's upcoming co-op heist caper Payday 2 is already turning a profit for the studio, despite the game not being out for another week.

Preorders of the game have covered the money invested by publisher 505 Games six days before the game's official launch, according to Starbreeze CEO Bo Andersson-Klint. Payday 2 will be released for PC on August 13, with Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions being rolled out later that week.

"Today Starbreeze has once again demonstrated that our strategy of focusing on our own properties is correct,“ said Andersson-Klint in a statement (translated from Swedish by Gamechup). “Not only have we managed to deliver a desirable product in Payday 2 but also executed a promotion that few companies of our size can."

“We now look forward to the royalty income that can secure the company“s development of its own IP in the future. That Payday 2 generates revenue for the company six days before the release is of course very unusual for games of this size and strengthens the long-term nature of our strategy.“

Payday 2 lead designer David Goldfarb said in June that Payday 2 would not feature microtransactions.

BioShock Infinite DLC's playable Elizabeth won't be "Booker in a dress"
Aug 8th 2013, 10:16

Irrational Games level designer Amanda Jeffrey says playing as Elizabeth in BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea won't be like playing Booker.

Irrational Games has spoken about playing as Elizabeth in the upcoming BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea DLC, saying that the team is working on making sure the sequences don't feel like playing "Booker in a dress."

"With the player getting the opportunity to see how Liz is experiencing the world through first person, we have to be ever so careful to not betray what the player has already experienced of Liz in Infinite and what they're going to experience of Liz in the first part of the DLC," said level designer Amanda Jeffrey in an interview with IGN.

BioShock Infinite's Burial at Sea, which is set in Rapture as opposed to BioShock Infinite's Columbia, is split over two parts, with the perspective changing from Booker to Elizabeth at the conclusion of the first chapter.

"That's always foremost in our mind, because Liz is such a different character to Booker, and if we were to just put Booker in a dress, then that would be the most awful betrayal of what we're doing for Liz, and players would just feel like it was a cheap way out, and that's not something that we want to do. So we don't have all of the answers yet for it, but we are very, very, very much aware of all of the dangers that we need to try and avoid."

According to Jeffrey, Elizabeth's sequences might even avoid combat entirely. “Elizabeth has to take things more from the side view,“ she said. "She needs to be kind of thinking in a roundabout way of how to deal with her enemies. And, sometimes, that might mean completely bypassing the enemy entirely, because she doesn't need to."

The switch between Booker and Elizabeth is triggered by a particular event, said Irrational Games boss Ken Levine. "I'm not gonna say what happens, but at the end of the first part of Burial at Sea, Elizabeth goes into another sort of realization and, to put you then in her shoes, we thought was gonna be something very powerful," he said.

Liz in Burial at Sea will also be aware of the events of BioShock Infinite, Levine adds. "She is very much Elizabeth, but also has a character. She's affected. She's definitely changed by what she's done. I will say certainly you are picking up after the events of Infinite, and this is a person who has seen all the things you've seen in Infinite, and that“s had an effect on her."

Jeffrey also spoke about how the player will be able to control Liz's unique tear abilities. "I hesitate to say too much about what we have just now," she said, "because it's entirely possible it will change in the next few weeks. I will say, though, that Elizabeth and her tear abilities are not necessarily a 'win button.'"

"She has an understanding of this universe and the various universes that she can visit, and she knows, once again, constants and variables. There are some things that she can change, and some things that just won't make a difference if she changes them or not. So she's not entirely godlike in her abilities. She will have far more powerful ways of interacting with the world than we saw in Infinite proper, but at the same time, it won't just be a case of walking to a space and going, 'I'm just going to press a button, and now happy ending for everyone!' Because, on the one hand, that wouldn't be any fun. And on the other hand, I think that, unfortunately, things are never gonna be that easy for Liz. She has to fight for her happy endings. She's never that happy.“

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft beta approaching soon
Aug 8th 2013, 07:23

Production director describes state of playable beta as "not days away," but "not months away, either".

Blizzard has released updated news regarding its upcoming online collectible card game Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft.

In an announcement on the official website, production director Jason Chayes described the playable beta as "not days away," but "not months away, either."

According to Chayes, the discussion has so far focused on the North American beta. Plans for a dedicated beta in Europe, Korea, and Taiwan will include "fully localised builds."

Players who are chosen to participate in the beta testing phase and make a real-money in-game purchase will receive a "special token of appreciation" in the form of a golden version Gelbin Mekkatorque card. The card will only be available in the open and closed beta testing phases, and can be obtained via purchasing card packs or an Arena ticket. Card packs can also be earned by participating in matches.

Three hundred total cards, based on the World of Warcraft classes, will be available at launch.

HearthStone: Heroes of Warcraft is an online collectible card game focused on one-versus-one matches, and uses Battle.net for matchmaking. Players can sign up to participate in the beta phase on the official website. The full game is due out this year.

Naughty Dog reveals original story details for The Last of Us
Aug 8th 2013, 06:41

The Last of Us creative director speaks at length about character evolution and changes during the game's development.

Naughty Dog has discussed original concepts for The Last of Us in the September issue of Game Informer Magazine, VideoGamer.com has reported.

Warning: the following contains major spoilers for the game“s single-player campaign.

The news comes just days after the game's creative director, Neil Druckmann, tweeted a piece of concept art showing Joel being attacked, teasing that players will be able to find out more about alternative ending scenarios at the studio's upcoming PAX Prime panel.

According to the report, during development, Tess was originally a more sinister, revenge-motivated character.

"What's interesting is that originally in the story, Tess took more of a villain role," Druckmann said. "Tess was betrayed by Joel and took on a mission to pursue him across the country. That storyline never worked out. The storyline shifted and Tess took on this role where she became more of a believer and she helped motivate Joel."

Ultimately, it didn't fit, and the angle was abandoned. "We had a tough time understanding why Joel would take this journey--we weren't buying it," he said. "We also had a hard time buying that Tess would go on a vendetta. We could understand her pursuing Joel a little bit, but why would she go for a year around the country? Those things were solved by saying that Tess is going to die when she gets bitten, but her dying wish to Joel is to do this one good thing--help me do this one good thing so my soul can rest because I've done all these horrible things."

Ellie also changed during the course of the game's creation, maturing as the story progressed.

"Ellie's arc originally was that she didn't kill any non-infected people until the end, when she was going to kill Tess when Tess was torturing Joel," Druckmann said. "What we realised is that we had to get Ellie engaged more in the combat, because when she was disengaged from the action for that long, you didn't care so much. So that changed pretty early on. We decided it wasn't going to be about the first time she killed someone, it was more about this coming-of-age story of the impact that the horrors of violence has on her over the course of the game.

"That culminates with her conflict with David. That happened pretty quickly, just based on some things we realised about the story and how we had to integrate it into the gameplay."

As has been discussed previously, the game's ending also changed dramatically, with the original idea testing poorly with players. Many went as far as to call it anticlimactic.

"The original ending when we pitched the game was a much more hopeful ending, where Joel and Ellie make it to San Francisco, and that is a town run by people who are trying to restore society," Druckmann revealed. "Joel has killed all these doctors and lied to Ellie, and Ellie just fully buys into the lie. So, you're left with the idea that they are going to live the rest of their lives in this town. The camera pulls back and maybe everything is going to be alright for these two. I was working on writing, and it didn't feel honest anymore. After everything they've done and everything they've been through, that was letting them off a little too easy--especially for Joel.

"When we did focus testing, at least initially until some of the hospital stuff started coming together, it tested very poorly. People said it's unclear, anticlimactic, unsatisfying“ A lot of people at the company felt the same way. A few designers didn't like the ending I had in mind. But then, as time passed and they thought about it, they came around and really appreciated. I think that happened with other people, too."

Naughty Dog creative director Neil Druckmann and game director Bruce Straley will host their panel--Pitching The Last of Us--at PAX Prime, being held in Seattle at the end of August. The pair spoke at length about the inspirations, ambitions and challenges producing the game in GameSpot's recent feature.
