Square Enix confirms prequel will be released exclusively on PlayStation 3 next year in North America.
Square Enix announced today that role-playing game Drakengard 3 will be released exclusively on PlayStation 3 in 2014 in North America. Its arrival will mark the first new installment in seven years, following Drakengard 2 for the PlayStation 2 in 2006.
Drakengard 3 is an action game that mixes ground-based combat and air combat using dragons. Players control two sisters named Zero and One who wield the power of the ancient Utautai goddesses.
The former wishes to kill the remaining Utautai for reasons unknown, while the latter wants to bring peace and stability to the world.
In Japan, a special 10th anniversary Drakengard 3 box set will include a book called Drakengard: World Inside, as well as a music CD and a Blu-ray disc titled Drakengard History Films. It is not clear if this bundle will be offered in North America.
"If any creator has not played Mario, then they're probably not a good creator," says Mega Man and Dead Rising designer.
Nintendo's Mario platformer franchise is the "development bible" for game creators, according to Mega Man and Dead Rising designer Keiji Inafune. Speaking with IGN, Inafune described Mario as the "anchor that grounds almost all games."
"If any creator has not played Mario, then they're probably not a good creator. That's something I can say with 100 percent confidence. Mario is, for game creators, the development bible," Inafune said. "There are so many hints about good design, about cute characters, about innovation in using an existing gameplay system. It's something you have to constantly look at and examine and take hints from as a game creator. It's the anchor that grounds almost all games."
Inafune said he has "total respect" for Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, so much so that he said he believes Miyamoto should be designated a "cultural treasure."
"He's talked about in all different countries. Lots of people know him. He's pushed forward Japanese culture and interest in Japan all over the world," Inafune said. "He's somebody that deserves everyone's ultimate respect, and a lot of that is due to being able to create Mario. And Super Mario Bros. 3, of course, within that, was a fantastic game."
The next core Mario game is Super Mario 3D World, which will be released for Wii U on November 22.

New "Collective" initiative from Tomb Raider and Deus Ex publisher revealed through partnership with Indiegogo; creators can potentially use "older Eidos IP" for their projects.
Tomb Raider and Deus Ex publisher Square Enix has announced an all-new crowdfunding platform called Collective, made possible through a partnership with crowdfunding site Indiegogo.
The program is described as a "curated platform" that will allow creators to post ideas and have gamers decide whether those concepts should become a reality or not.
Developers will pitch their ideas to a "dedicated, core gaming community," which includes a due diligence "evaluation phase" from Square Enix.
If the idea is approved after 28 days of processing through the feedback platform, the project will be eligible for crowdfunding through Indiegogo.
In addition, Square Enix said it will use its "experience of bringing games to market" to help creators understand how much money they will need to raise to make their idea a reality. All projects will be checked by Square Enix to ensure that the scope of the pitch is in line with the developer's "ability and ambition" to deliver.
Submitting pitches to Collective is free, though creators will need to agree to "some terms and conditions."
Square Enix also said that creators "could" have the chance to work with "older Eidos IP" from the company's back catalog for new projects. More information about submission parameters and IP selection will be provided at GDC Next in November.
Director of marketing says "I don't think it'll be console-exclusive very long," believes initial console exclusivity for Halo hurt the brand overall.
According to a representative for PC chip maker Intel, it is not a question of if Grand Theft Auto V will be released on PC, but when. Director of marketing for Intel's Premium Notebooks Chris R. Silva told PC Gamer that the open-world game won't remain a console-exclusive for much longer.
"At least with Grand Theft Auto, I don't think it'll be console-exclusive very long. But that's what happens when you have a brand new launch with two companies that have lots of money trying to make sure they have content."
The reason Rockstar Games has not announced GTAV for PC, according to Silva, is because "Somebody paid a lot of money to make sure that title was exclusive."
The PC iteration of Grand Theft Auto IV launched about eight months after the console versions shipped in April 2008. Nearly 600,000 people have signed an online petition calling on Rockstar Games to release GTAV on PC.
Also in the interview, Silva said Microsoft's decision to launch the Halo series as a console-exclusive, with ports of the original and Halo 2 coming later, "hurt" the brand overall. No Halo game has been released on PC since Halo 2.
Director of product planning clarifies that developers can put conditions on automatic recording moments, but not every Achievement will be captured by default.
The Xbox One's Game DVR feature will not automatically record every Achievement a player unlocks, Microsoft director of product planning Albert Penello has clarified on NeoGAF.
"It won't be automatic for every Achievement. It's a feature that developers can unlock for achievements, OR, for instance, have hidden in the game for doing something cool or discovering something hidden," Penello said. "Basically, we allow developers access to Game DVR and they can put conditions on an automatic recording."
"But not every Achievement will automatically be recorded," he added.
It was previously said by an Xbox Australia representative that the Xbox One would in fact automatically record the moment a player unlocks all achievements.
Separately, a Microsoft representative provided a statement with more insight into the ways in which content can be captured on Xbox One using Game DVR.
"Xbox One keeps a rolling record of your most recent gameplay, and there are two main ways for this video to be captured by Game DVR," the representative said. "First, game developers mark 'greatest clips' that happen within the game that represent fun and interesting moments within gameplay, such as when you unlock certain Achievements. Additionally, you can also issue commands, with either your voice or the controller, to capture interesting moments you would like to record or that just happened."
Posting on its website this week, Nvidia said Call of Duty: Ghosts on PC would require 6GB of RAM and 50GB of hard drive space, as well as a Nvidia GeForce GTX 550Ti / ATI Radeon HD 5870 or better video card.
The game will be released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, and PC on November 5. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions will follow when those platforms launch later in the month.
Beta for military shooter adds new game mode on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.
The ongoing Battlefield 4 beta has added a new game mode. Beginning today, gamers can try the all-new Obliteration game mode, in addition to existing gametypes Conquest and Domination.
New Obliteration mode is rolling out in the #BF4 Beta (PC/PS3/X360). Server availability will increase gradually. http://t.co/kTZidvPahW
The Obliteration game mode for Battlefield 4 is designed for 24 players on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and 32 combatants on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. In this mode, a bomb spawns at a random location on the map. Both teams must fight to pick it up, drop it off at one of their opponent's three objectives, arm it, and destroy the objective.
Once the bomb has gone off, the next one randomly spawns in a new location. The game runs until one team has destroyed the other side's three objectives. Commander mode is optional for Obliteration.
The Battlefield 4 beta, which features the Siege of Shanghai map, began on October 1 and runs through October 15. The game launches in full on October 29 for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC and in November for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
PC, Mac, and Xbox 360 versions coming on Friday, with the PlayStation 3 version expected to follow a few days afterwards.
Telltale Games' The Wolf Among Us will launch this week on Xbox 360, PC, and Mac, the developer has confirmed.

Those who currently pre-order the PC version of the game in North America through the Telltale Games website will be able to receive a Collector's Edition DVD of the game for the cost of shipping and handling.
Telltale says the game is being developed by the same team who worked on last year's critically-acclaimed adaptation of The Walking Dead.
