Nintendo promises to announce "the latest on Nintendo 3DS" this week.
Nintendo has teased an upcoming 3DS-themed Nintendo Direct for this week.
The publisher is promising to unveil "the latest on Nintendo 3DS" on Wednesday April 17. Gamers will be able to watch the event live at 07:00 PST/10:00 EST/15:00 BST.
Nintendo has also used Nintendo Direct events to unveil new Legend of Zelda and Mario games for the Wii U, promising to debut both titles at E3 this year.
The publisher's next major 3DS title, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, will be released June 9 in North America and June 14 in Europe.
Yannis Mallat says consoles with network requirement need to provide "clear benefits" if gamers are to adopt them.
Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat has weighed in on the possibility of an always-online requirement for next-generation platforms. Speaking The Guardian (via Game Informer), Mallat said he believes most gamers are already prepared for such a mandate.
"Well, that's a question you should put to Microsoft and Sony! I would say that a lot of people are already always online through other devices," Mallat said. "I would suspect that the audience is ready."
The executive added that if an always-online console hopes to see mass adoption, it must "provide clear benefits" for such a requirement, like extra content or featured services.
Earlier this month, Microsoft creative director Adam Orth made headlines after saying, "Sorry, I don't get the drama around having an 'always on' console. Every device now is 'always on'. That's the world we live in." He then used the hashtag "#dealwithit." He is no longer with Microsoft.
Microsoft has not commented at all on plans for a future platform, though multiple reports have indicated the company will announce the next Xbox on May 21.
The PlayStation 4 does not require an Internet connection. No console in history ever has.
"We have substantially shrunk down our operations but are still going strong while we work on a new IP,” said SuperBot director of operations David Yang in an interview with Edge.
A previous source had said to Edge that the studio was in the process of being closed.
The Californian developer was formed in 2009, and so far has only worked on last year's PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.
"SuperBot Entertainment will continue working on projects that reflect our passion for games and our commitment to creating award winning titles. We are very excited about beginning the next chapter of our future and invite all of our fans and supporters to follow our journey," said Yang in February.
Dean Hall spending sabbatical in Nepal climbing world's tallest mountain, promises development on standalone zombie game won't be affected.
DayZ creator Dean Hall is taking his skills to new heights. The developer explained on his blog today (via Kotaku) that he is taking a two-month sabbatical to climb Mt. Everest, the world's tallest mountain.
Fans may be upset over Hall taking time off as the DayZ standalone game is still not released, but he explained that his team of developers at Bohemia Interactive are more than capable of getting the job done while he is away.
"I realize some people are upset at my departure from the project for two months to climb Mt. Everest, but hopefully from this you can see the large team Bohemia have assembled behind the development that are continuing to innovate and develop DayZ Standalone in the direction of the game we all want," Hall wrote.
"This is going to take as long as it needs to, we want to release our initial alpha under the architecture it needs to avoid hacking and security issues--this is the only remaining task stopping us from releasing the alpha," he added. "But while this task is being completed, we can continue with other activities."
Hall penned his blog post today from the Mt. Everest base camp at an elevation of 5,400 meters. Tomorrow, he will head to the Khumbu Icefall to train on fixed lines and ladders as he prepares for his ascent to the peak.
Castle Crashers studio The Behemoth says it has "absolutely no problem" with XBLA team amid recent negative comments about Microsoft's developer relations policies.
Indie developer and Castle Crashers creator The Behemoth has spoken out to defend Microsoft and its Xbox Live Arcade team. During a recent Raptr Q&A (via Beefjack), project manager Emil Ayoubkhan said the developer's relationship with the Xbox 360 maker has been pleasant.
"We have absolutely no problem with Microsoft or the XBLA team," Ayoubkhan wrote. "We love working with them, and hopefully they enjoy working with us as well. I can't speak for other devs that may have bad mouthed Microsoft in the past, but that's definitely not the company that we are."
His comments came in response to a question about if The Behemoth would form a collective with other indie developers to address the "difficult" process of getting games onto XBLA.
"There shouldn't be any collectives formed to go against anyone else," Ayoubkhan wrote. "We should all be in this together and working towards making games that are fun to play."
"You'll always hear the negative side of things in the press, or from others, more than the positive aspects," he added. "It's definitely a lot more entertaining to read I suppose."
Most recently, Braid creator Jonathan Blow lambasted Microsoft's indie developer relations policies. He told Wired that the company's stance is to "put you through as much pain as you will endure in order to extract whatever [they] feel like this week."
Retro City Rampage creator Brian Provinciano also spoke poorly of Microsoft, claiming the company canceled the release of his game after he publicly spoke about the trials of the process. He further claimed that Microsoft forced him to resubmit the game, which resulted in an extra six months' work.
The game was submitted on April 9 (via games.on.net), where it was listed as multi-platform and given an M rating on account of its "moderate violence."
Arena was the title of the first Elder Scrolls game, released back in 1994 for MS-DOS. The randomly-generated open-world RPG featured Skyrim and many of its cities as locations, including Dawnstar, Whiterun, and Falkreath.
Publisher retiring The Sims Social, SimCity Social, and Pet Society on June 14 due to inactivity.
Electronic Arts announced today that it will close Facebook games The Sims Social, SimCity Social, and Pet Society on June 14. The publisher called the decision to retire the games "difficult."
EA explained that though "millions" played each game initially, user activity has since fallen off. "For people who have seen other recent shutdowns of social games, perhaps this is not surprising," the company said in a statement.
Players with unspent in-game currency balances are encouraged to spend the remainder of their money before the games go offline. Virtual currency will become "invalid" when the games shut down and it is not clear if players will be able to secure a refund for any unspent funds.
EA will make a "special offer" available to players of the affected titles in the form of an unspecified PopCap game. Further details on this promotion will be made available in-game "soon," EA said.
Facebook games from EA that will live on include Bejeweled Blitz, Solitaire Blitz, and Plants vs. Zombies Adventures.
The Sims Social was at the heart of a recent lawsuit between EA and Zynga. EA claimed that Zynga's The Ville was a Sims Social clone, alleging that it represents an act of copyright infringement. Though EA called the suit a matter of principle, the case was settled with Zynga reportedly pleased with the result.
The last time 2K showed XCOM in public was at E3 2011.
Recent reports have suggested that the game is being rebranded as The Bureau (via Kotaku), after registering two domains--whathappenedin62.com and whathappenedin62.net--coinciding with the year the XCOM shooter was set.
Further rumours dating back to last year claimed XCOM has been turned into a third-person shooter. 2K also asked customers, via a marketing survey, whether they'd rather pay full-price or opt for a cheaper downloadable title.
First twenty minutes of Bethesda's upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game revealed in new video leak.
New gameplay video footage from The Elder Scrolls Online has leaked, showing off the first 20 minutes of Bethesda's upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game.
The video clip shows off character creation, nine races, and three classes (Dragonknight, Templar, and Sorcerer). The clip also reveals the game's user interface, skill trees, lower-level quests, and combat through first- and third-person perspectives.
The Elder Scrolls Online entered closed beta at the end of March. Players interested in testing out the game can sign up for future testing periods that will ramp up in size and scope as launch approaches.
The Elder Scrolls Online will cover the entire continent of Tamriel, including the lands featured in previous Elder Scrolls games like Cyrodiil, Skyrim, and Morrowind. The game will be set 1,000 years before the events of 2011's Skyrim and will put players into the world on the brink of demonic assimilation at the hands of the daedric prince Molag Bal.
The game is due out in 2013. Its pricing model has not been announced, though the founder of game consultancy firm Gamesbrief, Nicholas Lovell, believes The Elder Scrolls Online will launch with a paid subscription but will eventually become free-to-play. Battlefield publisher believed to have laid off around 20 staffers from Galway, Ireland center.
Less than a year after Electronic Arts announced it would create 300 new jobs at its Galway, Ireland customer service center, the publisher has cut a number of positions at the outfit, according to a statement provided to Irish news site The Journal.
The exact number of cuts was not divulged, though The Journal said it understands the figure is under 20. A spokesperson for IDA Ireland--the group responsible for attracting foreign investment in the country--told the publication it "has a longstanding relationship with EA--the company continues to employ significant numbers in the Galway area."
EA's Galway outfit is just one of the company's studios to be hit with layoffs of late. Last Thursday, the publisher confirmed cuts as a means to "streamline" its business in preparation for the upcoming console transition. Layoff totals were not officially divulged, though Joystiq reports this figure includes 60-70 permanent employees and over 100 contract workers, mostly quality assurance testers.
Layoff news at EA comes a month after former CEO John Riccitiello admitted that EA would miss its financial projections for the full-year ended March 31.
"This is a tough decision, but it all comes down to accountability," Riccitiello said in his resignation letter last month. "The progress EA has made on transitioning to digital games and services is something I”m extremely proud of. However, it currently looks like we will come in at the low end of, or slightly below, the financial guidance we issued in January, and we have fallen short of the internal operating plan we set one year ago. EA”s shareholders and employees expect better and I am accountable for the miss."

NHL 14 will launch September 10 in North America and September 13 in Europe, Electronic Arts announced today. The game's debut trailer (below) is also now available.
This year's game--developed by EA Canada--includes collision physics powered by the same core technology behind FIFA's Player Impact Engine. This new technology will allow for "bigger, more thrilling hits, and truer-to-life collisions," EA said.
NHL 14's fighting features have also been expanded. The Enforcer Engine, which powers the Fight Night series, will be used for an all-new third-person presentation to highlight "the anatomy of a fight." The technology allows for true size and strength differentiation between players and new jostling mechanics, the developer said.
Some of NHL 14's other new features include 1,000 new skating animations, as well as "improved" acceleration made possible through the second iteration of the franchise's True Performance Skating system.
NHL 14 will also include a new "more responsive" deking system, whereby players can use just the left stick and one button to juke opponents.
The game's updated Be a Pro Career Mode will factor in decisions made off the ice to a player's overall legacy. Players can interact with teammates outside the rink and field media interviews, all of which will affect their relationship with fans, teammates, and management.
