NPD: BioShock Infinite soars to top spot in March US sales
Apr 18th 2013, 23:11

Irrational Games' shooter month's best-seller; overall industry sales slide 10 percent to $992.5 million.

BioShock Infinite was March 2013's top-selling title in the United States, according to data from the NPD Group published today. Overall industry sales slid 10 percent during the month to $992.5 million.

Rounding out the month's top five titles were Tomb Raider, Gears of War: Judgment, God of War: Ascension, and Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Of note, all top ten titles for March were sequels.

NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan explained in a statement that the $992.5 million in total sales equals only about half of the true market spend for the month.

"When you consider our preliminary estimate for other physical format sales in March such as used and rentals at $190 million, and our estimate for digital format sales including full game and add-on content downloads including microtransactions, subscriptions, mobile apps, and the consumer spend on social network games at $670 million, we would estimate the total consumer spend in March to be just under $1.9 billion," Callahan said.

Hardware suffered in March, with "deep declines" of 32 percent in dollar spend, with stronger downturns for portable hardware than for traditional consoles. The Nintendo 3DS was an anomaly, with sales for the platform growing 9 percent year-over-year.

The NPD Group does not disclose specific console sales data, but Microsoft announced today that the Xbox 360 sold 261,000 units during March and was the top-performer for the period. Sony and Nintendo have not made any sales data available.

Software sales in March 2013 across consoles, portables, and PC were up 2 percent, the first month of positive growth since November 2011.

"The performance of new launches was a major driver of the overall software growth for this month, with games launching in March 2013 selling over 40 percent more units than new launches in March 2012. There were positive trends for new launches that were seen across consoles, portables, and PC."

Callahan explained that March 2013 saw 20 percent fewer new releases, but these games generated nearly 70 percent more dollar sales per SKU than last year.

"With solid performances of new games like Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, and Monster Hunter Ultimate 3, 3DS software sales increased over 50 percent from last March."

March was a positive month for publisher Take-Two, as the strength of BioShock Infinite combined with continued sales of NBA 2K13 helped the publisher achieve the highest sales for an individual company since the NPD Group began tracking retail sales in 1995.

"Two strong launches for the month included Tomb Raider and BioShock Infinite, which were the highest first month sales for games in these franchises," Callahan said.

Switching to accessories, this sector was flat in dollar sales during March 2013, coming in at $216.1 million.

"While accessory spending was flat in dollar sales, continued strength of Skylanders, point cards, and headsets/ headphones resulted in a 15 percent growth in unit sales for March 2013 over March 2012," Callahan said.

Apr 18th 2013, 22:10

Microsoft reveals aging console the top-selling platform in United States last month; total platform spend hits $402 million.

Microsoft sold 261,000 Xbox 360 units in the United States during March, the company announced today, citing data from the NPD Group. The platform was the top-selling console in the region during the month and has been the top US performer for 27 straight months.

Total retail spend on the Xbox 360 (hardware, software, and accessories) came in at $402 million, the most for any console in the US.

Life-to-date Xbox 360 worldwide sales currently sit at 77.2 million. Microsoft said earlier today that it sold 1.3 million systems during the past three months and reiterated that Xbox Live membership stands at 46 million.

Sony and Nintendo have not announced sales for their platforms. The NPD Group will announce full March sales later today.

77 million Xbox 360s sold
Apr 18th 2013, 21:00

Microsoft sold 1.3 million units in past three months to reach new overall life-to-date sales milestone; Xbox division sees revenue rise 56 percent to $2.53 billion.

Microsoft sold 1.3 million Xbox 360 units in the past three months, helping the platform's total install base reach 77.2 million across the world since the console launched in November 2005.

The 1.3 million consoles sold during the quarter is down 9 percent year-over-year.

The company announced the new milestone today as part of its latest financial report today for the three months ended March 31. Microsoft also reiterated that Xbox Live has over 46 million members, an 18 percent surge from the year prior.

Overall, Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices division, which encompasses Skype and Xbox, saw revenue rise 56 percent to $2.53 billion. The division's operating income grew, but was offset by increased research and development expenses, which jumped by $113 million (28 percent) primarily reflecting higher headcount-related expenses.

In addition, Entertainment and Devices Division cost of revenue jumped $275 million (23 percent) due mainly to increased royalties on Xbox Live content and games. These were not specified.

"The bold bets we made on cloud services are paying off as people increasingly choose Microsoft services including Office 365, Windows Azure, Xbox Live, and Skype," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said in a statement. "While there is still work to do, we are optimistic that the bets we've made on Windows devices position us well for the long-term."

Microsoft also announced that chief financial officer Peter Klein will leave the company at the end of June after spending almost four years in the role and eleven years overall at the technology giant. The company said it will name a new CFO from the company's financial leadership team in the coming weeks.

Illinois library rejects request to stop stocking M-rated games
Apr 18th 2013, 19:24

Elmhurst Public Library board members shoot down request from resident group seeking to change library's policy.

Residents of Elmhurst, Illinois will not be barred from borrowing M-rated games at their local library. The Chicago Tribune reports that Elmhurst Public Library officials this week shot down requests from a group of residents seeking to change the library's policy, citing no connection between violent games and violent behavior.

"There's no evidence I can see between these games and violent behavior," library director Mary Beth Campe told the paper.

She and other board members said they believe the inclusion of M-rated games in the library's catalog is a matter of freedom of expression, protected under the First Amendment.

At a meeting Tuesday, citizen group speaker Jim Schuetz said the group was not seeking a ban on the games, but rather wanted the library to "implement selection criteria and procedures" for the games the library chose to make available. He said he was motivated to take action after President Obama called on citizens to take steps to reduce gun violence in the United States following the Sandy Hook shooting in December.

According to Campe, materials chosen for the library--including M-rated games--are selected on the basis of online sources of popular material as well as community requests. Such an approach leaves room for contestable material, but this is nothing new, a board member said.

"Some citizens consider Harry Potter or Fifty Shades of Grey objectionable," board member Jan Vanek said. "We are in a culture of violence, but it doesn't start in the public library."

The Elmhurst Public Library stocks E, T, and M-rated games, but no AO titles. According to the Chicago Tribune, the library requires anyone checking out an M-rated game to provide identification proving they are 17 or older and self-checkout is not allowed for these games.

Some of the M-rated games available at the library, according to a catalog search, include various Killzone, Call of Duty, and Grand Theft Auto games.
