Obsidian's plan for Fallout: New Vegas 2 Feb 12th 2013, 15:29 CEO Feargus Urquhart says studio would "love" to make sequel; it would take place on west coast of US, maybe in Los Angeles.
Obsidian Entertainment would "love" to make Fallout: New Vegas 2, studio CEO Feargus Urquhart told Rock Paper Shotgun. No firm plans are in place just yet, but he said the game would be separate from whatever future Fallout game Bethesda may be working on, potentially a Boston-set Fallout 4. "I think if we were to do Fallout: New Vegas 2--or just a new Fallout--we would probably separate it from what the internal team at Bethesda’s doing," Urquhart said. "We’d keep it on the West Coast, because we’re West Coast people. They’re East Coast, so it makes sense.’ Urquhart also teased that the game could be set in Los Angeles and even take inspiration from zombie series The Walking Dead. ’And we need an interesting confined area. So I mean, it could be LA. Fallout LA," he added. "That could be interesting. It’d probably be The Boneyard, which is from Fallout 1. It could be very different. It could be almost a Walking Dead meets Fallout-like thing because of all the radiation.’ Fallout: New Vegas 2 is not the only new game Obsidian wants to make. Urquhart revealed last week that he has pitched LucasArts on a new Star Wars role-playing game. This title would be set between the events of Episode III and Episode IV, though Obsidian has yet to speak with new Star Wars owner Disney about the game. Obsidian is currently working on South Park: The Stick of Truth and Project Eternity. Kinect sales have reached 24 million units worldwide, Microsoft revealed last night during the All Things D: Dive Into Media event. This is 5 million more than the 19 million sold by May last year. Kinect--formerly Project Natal--launched in November 2010. The technology currently retails for $99, though refurbished models are presently on sale through the Microsoft store for $70. Kinect units are also available in a range of Xbox 360 bundles. An updated version of Kinect is rumored to be at the core of Microsoft's next-generation platform. In addition, Microsoft reiterated that 76 million Xbox 360 consoles have been sold around the world to date. This is three times the number of original Xbox consoles sold, Microsoft said. Xbox Live now has 46 million subscribers, the company added, noting this represents 15 percent year-over-year growth. An Xbox Live Gold subscription carries a price tag of about $5 per month, meaning Microsoft generates revenue of around $230,000,000 per month from subscriptions alone. Microsoft also said 2012 was the "biggest year for entertainment and games usage" through the platform, serving 18 billion hours of "entertainment" during the year, up 10 percent year-on-year. The average Xbox Live Gold subscriber in the United States spends an average of 87 hours a month on Xbox, also up 10 percent from last year, the company said. Citing data from the Experian Simmons Spring 2012 Media Survey, Microsoft said 38 percent of the total Xbox Live audience in the United States is female and 54 percent has at least one child in their household. The Xbox 360's days may be numbered, as it has been widely speculated that Microsoft will usher in a next-generation platform by the end of the year. This console may even be announced at an Apple-style media briefing in March, perhaps in conjunction with the 2013 Game Developers Conference. Warner Bros. has confirmed a third entry in the Batman Arkham series will launch in 2013. As part of parent company Time Warner's latest earnings report last week, CFO John Martin said the company's "strong" games release for the year includes a new entry in the series. "And we also have a strong games release this year, which will include the next release in the Batman Arkham franchise," Martin said. "So all in all, we expect Warners to post another very strong year in 2013. And with a little luck, the year should be as good or maybe even a little bit better than 2012." Separately, VG247 sources claim this new project is not in development at series creator Rocksteady Studios. That development house is rumored to be working on a stylized prequel that will detail the Dark Knight's first encounter with the Joker. It is not expected until 2014 at the earliest. Warner Bros. last month registered 15 new Batman domain names, including Arkham Universe, Arkham Legend, Arkham Origins, Arkham Rises, and others. Batman: Arkham City is the latest entry in the series. It was developed by Rocksteady Studios and shipped for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 18, with a PC version following on November 22. The game received a strong critical reception and shipped 6 million units. Lego Lord of the Rings will travel to Mac on February 21, developer Feral Interactive announced today. The game launched last year for consoles, portables, and PC. It is based on Peter Jackson's Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings motion picture trilogy and follows the storylines of each film, using dialogue from the movies. Unlike the Lego Harry Potter franchise, which was split over two games, the entire Lord of the Rings saga will be told in one entry. The game follows Frodo Baggins and the unlikely fellowship that sets out from Rivendell on a dangerous journey to destroy The One Ring and bring peace to Middle-earth. Throughout Lego Lord of the Rings, players will enter the Mines of Moria, climb the Misty Mountains, and battle orcs, uruk-hai, and the nasty balrog. In keeping with the staples of the Lego franchise, Lego Lord of the Rings is peppered with lighthearted interpretations of the source material, with gamers tasked with solving puzzles along the way. Character players featured in the game include Frodo, Aragorn, Gandalf, Legolas, Gimli, Boromir, Sam, Merry, and Pippin. For more on Lego Lord of the Rings, check out GameSpot's review. Bungie has launched a new teaser webpage hinting that the studio will reveal its all-new universe--rumored to be titled Destiny--on Monday, February 18. An alternate reality game (ARG) has been uploaded to alphalupi.bungie.net, which calls on users to interact with a series of objects to reveal cryptic images and lines of text. Of note, Alpha Lupi is the brightest star within the Lupus constellation. Lupus is Latin for Wolf. The text on the teaser page reads: Our sky is filled with unseen signals. Radio-frequency emissions pulse and flit and dance all around us. Yet even a singing patch of sky can be observed, and transformed into a range of frequencies. Can you hear it? No, not yet. It has not yet arrived. But together we can receive its call. Imagine combining the observations of thousands across the globe on an object meandering through the heavens. The resulting array would be quite large. Quite powerful. This is your task. Alone it will not be enough. Coordination and timing is needed. Observations must be made simultaneously. Your window will be small. Five minutes at most. But windows may be reopened. And the distance between observer pairs will be key. There will always be limitations in clarity, so the results must be archived for study. Highly technical observers may be required. Detailed frequency analysis is recommended. Everything that belongs to us will be ours, but only if we create the capacity to receive it. The arrival of the new teaser site follows Bungie's announcement last week that it would reveal Destiny in a "matter of weeks." The developer will discuss this new universe in greater detail during the 2013 Game Developers Conference at the end of March. Destiny is Bungie's first project as part of a 10-year publishing deal with Call of Duty company Activision. Legal documents from May suggested that the game will be released for the Xbox 360 in 2013, with a 2014 release slated for the PlayStation 3. The game is reportedly "quite like Halo." A "total train wreck" of development saw Gearbox outsource the entire single-player campaign of Aliens: Colonial Marines to TimeGate Studios, a recently surfaced forum post by an alleged ex-staffer at Gearbox has claimed. The long-dormant post from May 2012 (spotted by Superannuation) pours cold water on another poster's anticipation for the title. "Hate to say it, but I wouldn't get your hopes up too high for Colonial Marines," it said. "I used to work at Gearbox, and the development of that game has been a total train wreck, going on what, 6 years now? Gearbox isn't even making the game, except for the multiplayer. Primary development was outsourced to TimeGate Studios, which has a less than stellar past." "I hope it proves me wrong, as I still have alot of friends still working at Gearbox, but I am expecting it to be average at best." The author of the comment said he now works for Austin-based startup Armature Studio, a team founded by some of the ex-Retro staff behind Metroid Prime and responsible for the PS Vita port of the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. TimeGate Studios is credited for development in Aliens: Colonial Marines, alongside Shoot Many Robots developer Demiurge Studios and Nerve, who handled the multiplayer for id's Return to Castle Wolfenstein. The claims that TimeGate Studios handled so much of the game's development clashes with previous statements. Speaking to Gamasutra last year, Gearbox president Randy Pitchford said "roughly 80 percent of the work on Colonial Marines is being done in-house at Gearbox, with the rest being done by outside developers." Sega did not respond to comment when approached by GameSpot. In his 4.5 GameSpot review, Kevin VanOrd said "the first two Alien films are steeped in mystery and anxiety, qualities all but absent in developer Gearbox's lackluster interpretation. Instead, Aliens: Colonial Marines is a shallow bit of science-fiction fluff with cheap production values and an indifferent attitude. It's forgettable enough to deem unnecessary, which is a grievous sin for a game in a universe brimming with so much potential." Multiplayer, however, gets a more positive appraisal. "Competitive play finds more success," says Kevin, "because the unpredictability of other players leads to occasional moments of tension. All four modes pit a team of marines against a team of aliens, though Escape is the standout among them. Here, four marines make their way through alien-infested territory from one mark to the next, hoping to escape the wrath of the acid-spitting, sharp-clawed opposition." Aliens: Colonial Marines is available on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. A Wii U version will be released in March. A season pass for the game's multiplayer modes is also available.
