Microsoft 'insider' responds to PS4 - Report Feb 1st 2013, 14:45 Unnamed source says "victory will go not to those who make the most noise, but those who make the most impact."
A "Microsoft insider" speaking to CVG has responded to Sony's next-generation tease. This unnamed person said future platform supremacy will be awarded to the company with the most substance, not the most flash. "Victory will go not to those who make the most noise, but those who make the most impact," this person said. In addition, a Sony insider told the site that the company is not focusing on outperforming the Xbox 720 in terms of raw power. Previous reports suggested the PS4 and Xbox 720 would be feature the same graphics card. "The war won't be won by producing the most powerful system," the person said. Sony last night invited gamers to "see the future" of the PlayStation brand on February 20 at 6 p.m. EDT. The company will hold an event in New York City that evening where the PlayStation 4 is to be revealed, if a report from The Wall Street Journal proves accurate. The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red today unveiled its newest game engine, the REDengine 3. The third iteration of the company's in-house technology, the new engine has been built to develop open-world role-playing games with non-linear stories. "If we look at RPGs nowadays we find two approaches, one which emphasizes the story but limits the game world, and one that builds a vast, open world but hampers and simplifies the story," said studio head Adam Badowski in a statement. He said the REDengine 3 combines the positive components of both approaches, an industry-first, according to the developer. The new technology will allow players to roam a world without loading times, which will bring gaming "to a new level," he said. CD Projekt Red said its upcoming game Cyberpunk 2077 is running on the technology, as well as a second and unannounced game. Reports have long suggested this game is in fact the long-rumored The Witcher 3, though CD Projekt Red has yet to officially announce Geralt's latest outing. "The engine is a next-gen-ready solution that begins to blur the line between pre-rendered CGI movies and real time rendered graphics, bringing us closer to the most life-like world ever created in video games," the company said. The REDengine 3 will also feature new face and body animation systems, capable of displaying "movie-quality scenes and character interactions." The technology uses "high-dynamic-range rendering with 64-bit precision" and also includes a range of post-processing effects. These include color grading and flares from many lights, as well as a "high-performance" terrain system allowing multiple layers to be blended. Lastly, CD Projekt Red revealed a REDengine 3 screenshot (above right), showing a night-set waterside setting with mountains, trees, and clouds. Halo 4 will add a Team Doubles playlist next week with the game's latest matchmaking update, developer 343 Industries has announced. The studio said it has been working "day and night" to prepare the 2 vs. 2 playlist, which will feature three different gametypes. The first is Infinity Doubles, which lets players choose a custom loadout and allows for instant respawn and use of radar. Ordnances will become active at the traditional 70-point mark, but options are adjusted specifically for Team Doubles, 343 said. Games are played to 300 points. Doubles Pro features preset game loadouts (available at the 343 website) and the score limit is the same as above. However, radar, personal ordnance, and instant respawn are toggled off. Third, CTF Doubles is a customized version of the Capture the Flag game mode for teams of two. Custom loadouts and radar are enabled and respawn timers are set to 10 seconds. Flag locations have been tweaked, 343 said, to "provide an optimal experience for small maps and teams." Rules of the game are: five flags to win, three-second return, and 15-second rest. In addition, gamers do not need to have their flag home to score. A finalized map pool is still being worked on, though 343 said modified versions of Haven, Abandon, and Solace will be included, as well as some Forge-made maps. In addition to announcing and detailing Halo 4's new Team Doubles playlist, 343 also revealed two new specializations will be added to the mix next week. They are Rogue and Tracker. More details are available on the 343 website. Also on tap for Halo 4 in February is the game's next multiplayer map pack. The Majestic expansion adds new environments Landfall, Monolith, and Skyline to the mix. The three-million selling Guild Wars II will force its users to change their account passwords as part of a security drive, ArenaNet has announced. Users who have not changed their password since September 12, 2012--when ArenaNet introduced password blacklisting on its servers--will be required to change their password from February 7, 2013 if they wish to continue playing. Gamers are being encouraged by ArenaNet to change their passwords as soon as possible, however. ArenaNet introduced password blacklisting, which stops users from choosing passwords that hackers have attempted to use in the past, went active as part of a major security update last year. Guild Wars II suffered from security problems at launch, and ArenaNet has been working to combat the situation since. Speaking in September, ArenaNet president Mike O’Brien explained the password blacklisting process in detail. "We're building a blacklist of all the passwords that hackers are scanning for--it’s already at 20 million passwords and growing--and we’re preventing new customers from choosing any of those passwords," he said. "This system has substantially eliminated hackers' ability to steal new accounts, as all new accounts now cannot possibly match what the hackers have been scanning for. The rate of account hacking was about 1.5 percent for accounts created before this blacklist was in place, and is about 0.1 percent for accounts created after." "Because this has been so successful at protecting new accounts, we want to extend it to protect existing accounts too. But it’s harder for us to know whether passwords of existing accounts are known to hackers: it’s difficult to distinguish between a login attempt by the real customer and a login attempt by a hacker. So we'll take the safe approach and ask all existing customers to change their passwords, and blacklist everyone’s old password in the process." Temple Run 2 has surged past Angry Birds Space to become the "fastest growing mobile game" ever. Developer Imangi Studios has announced that the game was downloaded over 50 million times across iOS, Android, and Kindle devices in its first 13 days. Angry Birds Space needed 35 days to reach 50 million downloads. Breaking the figure down further, since Temple Run 2's January 17 launch, the game was downloaded 3.85 million times per day, or 160,000 per hour; or even 2,671 copies per minute. The game saw 6 million day-one downloads, on its way to 20 million in four days. Temple Run 2 still has work to do if it wants to catch its predecessor, as the original Temple Run has been downloaded over 170 million times. The Temple Run franchise was created by a husband-and-wife development team Keith Shepherd and Natalia Luckyanova in Raleigh, North Carolina. The studio has since added a team of additional developers. The series has expanded outside of the game realm through a number of licensing partnerships, including one with Disney Pixar for Temple Run: Brave, which featured characters and environments from Disney's animated film. Sony's February 20 "PlayStation Meeting" event in New York will see the PlayStation 4 being officially unveiled, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. Last night, Sony released a 45-second video inviting gamers to "see the future" on February 20, with invitations to the "PlayStation Meeting" event being sent out shortly afterwards. While Sony has not made the details of its event public, many speculated that this would be the unveiling of the PS4. The Wall Street Journal has now directly said Sony will announcing their new console at the event, with a report saying "people familiar with the matter have said the new device will make its debut there." Social features and the user experience will be two of the key focuses of the new console over raw hardware power, according to the report. "Sony is planning to incorporate more social gaming aspects into the new machine," said the WSJ. "Also, while hardware improvements were a key focus of past console upgrades, Sony is more focused this time on the changes in how users interact with the machine." The WSJ also states that Sony will debut the PS4 before Microsoft unveils its own next-generation Xbox, although both machines will launch later in 2013.
