The War Z servers attacked by hackers Jan 4th 2013, 15:31 Infamous online game was temporarily forced offline.
Controversial zombie survival game The War Z has found itself a victim of multiple hacking attempts over the last few days. Speaking on the game's official forums, community manager Kewk detailed the various attempts at disrupting the game: "Guys over the last few days we have been under attack by various forums [sic] of malicious attempts to shut down our servers." "First we were hit with an attack that would rest [sic] our DNS IP so that you could not connect. This was solved a couple days ago early in the morning but took time to actually resolve world wide once the fix went in." A couple of days later the game found itself "being hit, again, with a DDoS attack on our login server. We are implementing additional DDoS protection and hope to have this resolved asap. Unfortunately with these types of attacks it is very difficult to give a good time frame of when it will be resolved." Kewk also detailed the various attempts at resolving the problems, with some successes for developer Hammerpoint Interactive. Right now it seems like the issues have been mostly fixed, though users trying to play from the now-removed Steam version still appear to be running into issues. Last week, The War Z creator Sergey Titov apologised for the game's misleading launch and subsequent Steam delisting, saying that he "became arrogant and blinded by the early success and quick growth" of the game. Gamers who purchase a second-hand Wii U can re-download all digital content the past owner previously purchased free of charge. That's according to a NeoGAF user, who claims games are tied to the console itself and not any one individual Nintendo Network ID account. The user--DSN2K--claimed the second-hand system was "wiped," though it was not mentioned where the console was purchased. The user noted that upon entering the Wii U eShop, some games did not have a price, but were instead labelled "redownload," despite never having paid for them. Thus far, the user has been able to download Trine 2 and Nano Assault for free. A Nintendo representative was not immediately available to comment. Activision's suite of James Bond games have all disappeared from Steam, Xbox 360 and Activision's own digital store. Spotted by Neogamr.net, 007 Legends and James Bond 007: Blood Stone, from now-defunct studios Eurocom and Bizarre Creations, and the Treyarch-helmed Quantum of Solace are no longer available to purchase from Steam. There are no results in Activision's own store, either. On the consoles, the Xbox 360 Games on Demand version of GoldenEye 007: Reloaded has also been pulled. The game is still available to buy on the PlayStation 3, but it is not clear if the game will remain listed on the PlayStation Store when the marketplace is refreshed this week. One reason for games being pulled from digital sale can be down to licensing agreements expiring, as happened with GTA: Vice City on Steam recently. Activision obtained the gaming rights to the then-lucrative Bond license from EA in 2006, in a deal with MGM and EON that was scheduled to last until 2014. It is possible that Activision has pulled the plug on this arrangement. The last Bond game, Eurocom's 007 Legends, was derided by critics and failed to make an impact on the sales charts, despite being timed to coincide with the release of uber-blockbuster Skyfall. The studio's previous game, the lukewarm 2010 remake of the classic GoldenEye 007, also failed to capture hearts and wallets and the Derby-based studio was closed at the end of 2012. Active development on PC RTS Age of Empires Online has ceased, Microsoft has announced. Writing on the game's blog, executive producer Kevin Perry announced there would be no new content created for game as it has finished its "development phase" and was now moving into its "support phase". Perry was quick to reassure players that the free-to-play game is not on its last legs, however. "You can still do all the things you do today; we're not taking away anything you already have. There will be no new civilizations or features, that's all." Publisher Microsoft and developer Gas Powered Games will continue providing support for the game, but Perry conceded that "fixing any remaining bugs and addressing balance issues will be slower and, frankly, more difficult for the team." "Some may, in fact, be unfixable. We will be watching carefully in case any critical bugs appear. Perry also explained that development on the game has been forced to stop for financial reasons. "Creating top-tier content, as we have been for the last year and a half, is very expensive - too expensive to maintain for long, as it turns out." "We can no longer afford to keep creating it. AOEO already has a very large amount of high-quality, hand-crafted entertainment, and adding more is no longer cost-effective." "This is a bittersweet announcement for me to make," Perry added. Age of Empires Online, one of Microsoft's few attempts at breaking the free-to-play market, was launched in 2011 to modest appreciation from critics. The game was initially criticised for being too miserly with its content, though subsequent updates lowered the costs dramatically and the game went fully free-to-play in June 2012. Microsoft's other attempt at free-to-play, Microsoft Flight, spent less than four months in the air before seeing its wings clipped. "We have come a long way since August 2011," concluded Perry, "but now we have finished building the world of AOEO. We hope that you will join us in playing there for a long time to come." A new sister team to the League of Legends Season 2 world championship victors, the Taipei Assassins, has just been unveiled. According to the Taipei Assassin's official site (via Gosu Gamer), the team is called the Taipei Snipers and will be led by former Taipei Assassins member and leader MiSTakE. This is due to the fact that the team felt that their overall performance was beginning to slip after their victory in the LoL Season 2 tournament. Next to MiSTakE, whose role is the team's support, the Taipei Snipers' roster consists of Zonda (top laner), OhReal (jungler), NeXAbc (AP carry), and GodJJ (AD carry). Replacing MiSTakE's position in the Taipei Assassins is Hong-Wei 'Dinter' Xue. The new leader is a member named ToyZ.
